Re: How much boost is too much?
Back in the 70's and early 1980's I was pushing 30 psi boost through a highly modified Corvair. Was using a stock rod that was polished and shot peened with larger bolts. But they are a pretty tough engine. Also had to modify the oil system to feed the crank oil first. Motoring was making about ...

Re: Fair Price for 140HP cylinder Heads
You might check closely if you intend to install those 140 heads on that 64 164 engine. That was a one on year that the cylinder OD was the same as the 145 engine. You can probably make a spacer to fit the head . Other wise the cylinder will be loose in the head.
Just a "heads" up.

You still in the navy at LNAS? I'm about 30 minutes east of you if so. Just east of Visalia.
And, you need to reread how the 6 BTM retards based on boost.

Re: The infamous EDIS conversion
I've run (raced) with some of the fully programable ignitions and personally prefer some of the less complex ignitions. It's probably more generational related than anything. If you've grown up in the computer age your probably more likely to favor the programable stuff. I can tell you they are not ...

Re: The infamous EDIS conversion
Probably not as much energy as a CDI style ignition, but what it lacks in power it makes up for in accuarcy. MSD distributor based systems still come up short when it comes to putting the spark right where it needs to be- it doesn't matter how strong the spark is if it's still not hitting at the ...

Re: What Oil do you run?
The poll didn't specify what vehicle. Since I run different oils and types in different engines due to the application and roller or non-roller cam I just checked synthetic.
But for a Corvair flat tappet camshaft it can be a problem to run a fully synthetic oil because it can hamper the rotation of ...

Re: The infamous EDIS conversion
You say enough. I'm not familiar with this ignition manufacturer or is it a combination of stuff? I'm just curious as to how it compares with ignitions I've worked with over the years. The only way you can compare the deliverable energy of an ignition with a apple to apple comparison is the ...

Corvair Engine Mod Pictures
Let's see if the pictures come through.
This engine was a draw thru turbo engine with a mag reverse rotation. Today with all the electronic controls you could make substantially more hp and I would certainly change over to a blow thru which I am for the 1966 Corsa ride.

Re: Back to Corvair project after 26 years
flat6_musik asks: " BTW, what is the stock LSA of a corvair cam? "
It varies from 106 degrees to 111 degrees - the common 3839891 cam (found in 110s and some 140s) has the most at 111 degrees.
Ron - Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you have some cool parts, can you post some pictures?

Re: Corvair Engine Mods
I'm trying. Got the pictures on to my lap top. But can't seem to get them in a program that will move over to the web. They don't show up when it ask's for file link. I even loaded them into my email program thinking that might work but it didn't help. It's a Olympus (spelling?) program and camera ...

Corvair Engine Mods
Testing to see if pictures come through. If so, this is a picture of a Corvair block that I raced in Sand Racing. This was 1980 and the motor was about 181 CI turbocharged and was producing just in excess of 600hp. Corvairs have a goofy oil system, they feed the cam before the crank and with serious ...

Still trying to post some pictures. Got them from the camera into the lap top, but can't do anything with them.
Wife is helping (bless her), she is going to down load into her lap top and then email them to me. We'll see how this works.

Re: Thru Bolting Case & Heads???
I ran Sand Drags with a highly modified Corvair back in the late 70's and 80's. Pushed 30 psi boost through it. The crank was never a problem because of the opposed cylinders. Stress was equalized. Lifting the cylinder head off the cylinder was something that had to be dealt with. I had special ...
