Hey Bogey,
Having just done this it is fresh in my mind. You didn't specify EM or LM, so I will assume LM
because I think it is more difficult. The cable it self is held in by a C-clip on the end and a nut on the cable housing.
I find access from the top works best for me. The way I get it is to take the support bolts out from the steering column.
This allows it to drop 3-4 inches and gives you a little more room on top for hands and light. I hope this helps. Rod

Thanks for the quick reply. It is a LM, I put my specs in my signature to save me from specifying each time I post. So do you put a wrench on the nut and then some pliers on the cable, and try to twist the nut a turn or two? I did drop the steering column down for more room, but cant seem to figure out which part on the pg cable to turn.

Then, getting it back on will hopefulky be less challenging.

See photo of my cable, taken from underneath looking up. Where is the "clip" that needs to come out? Is it in this picture? :dontknow:

Thanks.

Bogey,
To remove the nut on the cable housing I used needle nosed fliers on the nut from the top and a small
vise grips on the back of the housing. The C-clip is on the end of the cable located just out of view
at the top of your picture. Access from the radio side of the dash. It is very small. I popped it with a very small screw driver.

I still cant find the clip. I dont know what it looks like. Is it on the very end of the cable by the shift lever? Is it required to get the cable disconnected? What is the clip's function, if known?

Can you please walk me through how to get this cable disconnected?

I usually can figure this out, but i am at a loss here.

Hey Bogey,
Looking down from above the C-clip is located 3/4 inch behind where the shift handle
goes thru the dash panel. It may be helpful to remove the nuts that hold the shift mechanism
to the dash. This will allow you to turn the shifter a little for a better view. I hope this helps.

Extremely helpful! I see it now. I ended up shifting to low gear and that really exposed it. Thank you so much. I'm learning from the best. I'll get back at it and disconnect it tonight. The nut was obtainable from the radio side, 5/8" wrench with a whole bunch of super short turns.

The attached Adobe Reader file is an extract from the 1965 Corvair Assembly Manual. These pages specifically cover the Powerglide automatic transmission and include detail diagrams of the Powerglide shift lever and cable. Hopefully these illustrations will help you.

Section 7 of the 1965 Corvair Chassis Shop Manual (attached) also covers the shift assembly and cable, starting on page 7-32.
