I have a question and I am not sure if this is the correct place to post.
Are there drums from other cars that are interchangeable for a 64 Monza? I know other cars use the 4 X 4.5 pattern. I am going to do a complete brake job and I would prefer to find new drums. used turnable ones can be had but I would like to try to find new.
All my searching for 1964 corvair drums always shows the 5 bolt pattern. What is up with that? Bendix and Centric both show that EM's are 5 bolt.
I am very new to corvairs so be gentle on this vairmoron...LOL
Thanks
Rob

Re: Brake Drums - 1964 Monza Vert
They are certainly 4 bolt:) New drums are not readily available. The stock rear drums on the 64 were finned. These can be particularly hard to find turned or new. 1960-63 rear drums will work just fine instead, they are the same but not finned. The front drums must be 64, they are not directly interchangable with the 60-63. I suggest not spending alot of time looking for NOS (New Old Stock) drums. A good set of used turned drums should be fine. Be advised that many of the brake shoes for the early cars are a bit over sized anyway, requiring sanding down or turning of the drums for a good fit. So a new drum might have to be machined significantly anyway.
By the way, the best place to post mechanical questions is in the Mechanical/How to forum, but we are not too picky here and will likely provide answers (many even useful) regardless of where you post.

Corvair guy since 1982. I have personally restored at least 20 Vairs, many of them restored ground up.

It is always hard to find anything "Corvair" in local stores. Except for oil or gasoline I don't even try.
Here is some good brake configuration and performance information for Corvair brakes...

They currently seem to have new rear drums in stock, but sound like they are chronically out of stock for new front drums. I would suggest looking over their catalog information. Click on part numbers for pricing and availability information. If you need clarification or want to discuss new vs. used, a phone call to Clark's might be in order. Main Office Phone: 413.625.9776

CORVAIR RANCH http://www.corvairranch.com/ (717) 624-2805
A good used parts source.
There is really nothing wrong with used, properly inspected and turned drums, and in many cases you may not have the luxury of an option for new drums. Disc brake kits are available, but expensive. Good drum brakes are perfectly adequate on the street. Recommend you discuss this on the phone with several of the providers listed above.

Thank you
It is as I thought. I was planning on turning mine or buying used. I just thought I would float it out here. I appreciate your feedback.
