Carburetor

Post by Kevireno »

I have a 1965 Monza. 140 HP.

All four carbs have the little spring (float control spring).

The two secondary carbs have a little wire, that clips/goes around the head of the needle and then the other end goes through a little hole in the float arm. Kinda like a needle retainer.

The two primary carbs do not have this little wire clip for the needle.
Shouldn’t all four carbs have this little wire clip (needle retainer)?Image

That needle clip is not needed.

Thank you.
So, should I just go ahead and leave the needle clips on the secondary carbs then?

Is that a clip to the needle (doesn't look like it) or the "helper spring" for the float. Do you have Bob Helt's carb book? HIGHLY recommended.

I recall this came up a while ago. The consensus was the carburetor "kits" use common parts, BUT the needle to float arm retainer WAS NOT USED ON ANY OF THE Corvair Rochester carburetors. Used on other carburetors.

Bob Helts Corvair Rochester Carburetor books is very good and there is NO mention of this needle retainer part AFAIK.

Some say the "clip" can cause the needle in the Corvair Rochester to BIND the needle. I'd remove it - just me.

Over the years I've seen different needle and needle seat sizes in Corvair carburetor kits. Sometimes you have to add gaskets under the needle seat or adjust the float to make things line up.

Yep, spring is very important, wire clip is to be thrown away. Not used on H, HV carburetors.

Thanks to everyone.
I am now convinced that the little wire needle retainer is NOT needed in these carbs.

That clip was used on the Quadrajet 4bbl because the float had to lift the needle up out of the seat. On the H and HV the needle falls out. Do not use.
