Re: 65 convertible top motor

Jim, the convertible top system doesn't use pistons/cylinders. It's electric with gearboxes on both sides that are driven by the cables from the electric motor. If the motor system has failed, you could remove the gearboxes and likely make folding the top by hand easier.

Re: How to pump the lube out of a transaxle - fast

Just curious. For all of you that have used pumps to get the oil out of your transmission and final drive, how much did you get out? I've done this several times and have never gotten much more than three quarts out. (The 65 service manual says the combined capacity is a bit over a gallon.)

Re: Coil Resistance wire question

Not trying to jack the thread and I apologize up front, but I wanted to put out a "Thank you" and note of appreciation to "66vairguy" for all the information he's shared in the many threads he's contributed to (both mine and others) since I've been here. His answers are always detailed, concise ...

Re: Shifter lubrication

Since no one has replied to you yet, I'll give my recent experience. There are several dynamics involved with the LM shifters, at least for 65 which my car is. The shifter lever itself bolts to the front of the (outer) shift tube bracket from underneath the floor. The lever engages the front of the ...

Re: Instrument panel

The '63 has a different design (horizontal stripes) on the lower cluster (aluminum) face that matches the radio faceplate and glove box door. Don't know if this is important to you. You might be able to switch in the one from your old '63 cluster if you're careful.

Re: Buying a Corvair as a first car?

My 1st car budget in 1966 was $600. You should be able to get a very nice one for $15K. If you have the aptitude, you'll learn to work on it and you'll enjoy it. "Vintage" tools are available on eBay very reasonably. Just my opinion, but no vehicle will even warm up fully on a 2.5 mile trip to ...

Re: 1965 4-Speed Detent Spring

I did the same thing. Although the 65 service manual states there are and shows drain plugs for the transmission and final drive, neither in my car has them. I can't confirm if the transmission and final drive are original to the car, but they are the correct year (65). I got the detent ball and ...

Re: '65 Corsa Questions

Often, if the left or right signal flashes, but not the other, one of the bulbs may have a bad filament. Set the switch on the direction that doesn't flash and check the front or rear (and dash indicator) to see which bulb is not lit. A common problem with the plastic bulb sockets is that the metal ...

Re: LM Dual Exhaust

Not sure this will help you, but I recently installed the Clark's welded dual exhaust kit on my car. It came with this instruction leaflet that explains the orientation of the mufflers. (I also replaced the hangers and straps with new from Clark's.) The right side is straightforward as the heat ...

Jeff Field at Transaxle Engineering (Chatsworth, CA) has done all manner of transaxles for over 30 years. He still has the '63 Spyder I traded him decades ago.

Re: Has anyone used Clarks Pcv oval flex heater hose?

The PVC hose is decent, but there is active discussion on the need/value of that hose. This hose is part of the Fresh Air system. It connects to the rear of the upper shroud and ducts away a significant amount of cooling air from the #5 (right rear) cylinder before it reaches the cylinder and head ...

The lock cover mechanism is broken. The best fix is to replace the grill bar/lock cover with another. These turn up on Craigslist and eBay regularly.

Re: 63 brake issue help!!

The '63s came with self adjusters which are specific to the right and left sides. (The adjusters on one side are left hand thread and the other side are right hand thread.) Be careful that you don't get them mixed up. If the adjusters are inadvertently switched from side to side, they will adjust ...

Re: 63 Spyder head numbers.

The 62-63 turbo heads have 8:1 compression like the 80 hp heads, but have a (1) threaded hole for the cylinder head temp thermistor, (2) a turbo oil drain tube pressed into the boss in the right head and (3&4) special high temperature valves and valve guides. The 84 hp engine is basically the 80 hp ...
