63 Spyder head numbers.

Post by 63 Spyder Ragtop »

I don't know if I have a problem because I'm new to Corvairs. The head numbers match but the numbers (3513813) are listed for an 84 hp engine..
The block number is correct for a turbo 150 hp. I've misplaced my Junkyard primer but I don't think that it would shed any light on my issue. Can one of the experts here give me an idea what the differences may be between the 84 hp and the 150 hp heads are? I don't want to invest money in heads that I may not want to use. I can't really tell if there has been any PO modifications or not. My 63 may have been a late '63 because it has the titanium fan.

The 62-63 turbo heads have 8:1 compression like the 80 hp heads, but have a (1) threaded hole for the cylinder head temp thermistor, (2) a turbo oil drain tube pressed into the boss in the right head and (3&4) special high temperature valves and valve guides. The 84 hp engine is basically the 80 hp version with the 9:1 compression heads used on the 102 hp engine. These heads don't have the provisions for the thermistor or turbo oil drain and are higher compression than the turbo heads.

The attached booklet, CORSA Corvair Technical Guide 1+2 - Corvair Code Numbers, will help you in decoding some of the engine, head, and othe rmain component ID numbers.
...The head numbers match but the numbers (3513813) are listed for an 84 hp engine...
I think you transposed some number, since the above number is not valid. Did you mean 3813513? This number identifies heads from an 80 hp engine in a 1962-1963 145 CID Corvair engine, which had an 8:1 compression ratio. It would work in a turbo engine if an oil return line passage was added to accommodate oil return from the turbocharger, but it would not have the advanced valves unless the valves and valve guides were also changed.

The 84 hp engine you referred to was listed one line up in the chart, with a casting number of 3813512

The table listing all of the cylinder head numbers is on page 5 in the booklet.
