Re: Brakes
I am going to replace the springs now. A question as to why Clark's 2 wheel spring set is $40 and California Corvair 2 wheel Spring set is $20? Looks like the same set but missing the spring on the auto adjust to the shoe.

Re: Brakes
New brake hoses all the way around for the brakes. Took quite a bit to bleed all the air out after that. Had to use some grease around the nipple threads to keep air from getting back in. Took her out for a drive and the brakes felt pretty good. Then after about 5 miles or so, the pedal started ...

Perfect. I have the 61 manual. Guess I should just read it.
Thanks,

Re: Pitman Arm Bushing TOO TIGHT!
Another question as I am putting the drag link back together. How tight should I make the castle nuts that the cotter pins go through?

Re: Pitman Arm Bushing TOO TIGHT!
Oh, Hack saw would have been a good one. Thanks. The vice does go that wide so I think I will try that with a socket around the bolt end to press the new one in. As you can see in this picture, I had a bit of play in the steering.

Re: Pitman Arm Bushing TOO TIGHT!
Hi, Finally removed the old Pitman Bushing from the Drag Link. Had to remove the Drag Link so I could put it in a vice. Now I have purchased a new Pitman Bushing from Clarks. The rubber assembly with the new shell attached. Trying to put the new one into the Drag Link, it is a press fit. Is that ...

Re: Brakes
Hi 66vairguy, I have the original single master cylinder. I Think that the pedal when up to the top after backing up. And it sounds like a self adjuster. I have all wheels off and will retract the self adjuster all the way in, bleed off some fluid so the rear shoes sit against the pin, adjust the ...

Re: Brakes
Hi, I dismantled one rear brake assembly. Just took all the springs off and made sure I have it installed correctly. Especially the e-brake arm in the middle. Looked at the manual for the picture and it fits just right. Adjuster at the bottom is all the way in to start. Now, to get the shoes to sit ...

Re: Brakes
Hi, Good suggestions. I did bleed out some fluid and they retracted last time I had the wheels off. I think I am leaning towards the e-brake. I am going to back it all the way off and see if I can get everything sitting correctly. Springs are not new just looking nice. They may be original springs ...

Re: Brakes
Hi all, I am having a similar problem. Drive around the block and the rear drums are hot. Can not rotate by hand very well. I have replaced all 4 wheel cylinders but nothing else needed replacing. Look at this picture. How can I adjust the shoes manually if the top of the shoes are not bottomed out ...

Re: Coil Spring strange bolt
That is an easy test by jacking up the middle of the front and checking on any leaning. I'll do that and report back. I rearly don't want to change the springs that bad.

Re: Coil Spring strange bolt
Very interesting. I still want to replace my front springs. Looked at why the front is higher, it was so the car would be level with a load in the frunck and 4 people in the car. I will not have much of that so Clark's sells front springs with an inch or something shorter so unloaded it is level. I ...

Re: Coil Spring strange bolt
Thanks. Possibly time for some new front springs. I hear it is not easy to install. May as well get new shocks at the same time. Mo money$. I'll have to think about this one.

I have a strange bolt on my front driver coil spring. I was doing a brake job and found this. Any ideas?

Re: 62 Corvair manual transmission oil check/replace
I changed my trany and axle fluid yesterday. I took off the axle plug, stuck my finger in to see the oil level and went down as far as I could go and NO oil. Got a little scared. Then I put the pump in and tried to push the tube all the way to the bottom and did get some good black stuff out. It is ...

Re: 62 Corvair manual transmission oil check/replace
Ok. I'll use my pump. Its mothers day so I'll get at it tomorrow. I'll let you know what radio active sludge I get out of my trany.
