1960-700 Rebuild in South Africa

Post by Pauly »

Hi Guys,

I have started a complete restoration of a 1960 - 700 4door. My intention is to restore to origonal spec. I would like to establish the colour of the access panels in the front boot and engine compartment. My project was re-sprayed at some point but still has black access panels in the boot. The engine compartment access panels are the same colour as the car paint. Does anyone have a picture of an origonal battery tray installed?

GOLDVAIR on here has recently restored a 1960 700 4-door. I have a few pictures. This was taken at the 2009 Fan Belt Toss. The car was not quite finished as you can see.

Stunning picture, can you post a few more please? They would help me greatly.

It looks like the engine compartmnet access panels have been painted the same colour as the body, how about in the luggage boot (trunk)? For example the access panels to the horns? I am sure that these are painted black but want some confirmation. Rather odd for GM to have two different styles on one vehicle don't you think?

He hasn't restored the trunk yet. I'll see if I can get him on here to answer some questions for you. He's been super busy lately working on customers cars.

Can anyone please advise on the type of paint i should be using?

Since i want to restore to original and enter into concorse showing (in SA), should i be respraying with standard Duco celulose based paint or should i go with 2K? I do know the advantages and disadvantages of both types of painting methods but do not know how a "classic car concourse judge" would react.

Also, i presume that the door, hood and boot hinge bolts are sprayed over after fitting?

Hi Paul

I admire your work - I am nearing completion of my 700 now in UK but assembled in South Africa (P.E.)

Do you have any data on how many Corvairs were assembled in P.E. and were the CKD or was there some local content
- I am anxious not to upgrade my 700 but to keep it all OEM as much as possible (I may have to put a heater)

Any advice would be much appreicated
