Changing the hubs(?)

Post by Imnvegas »

I have a 64 Monza 900 with 4 bolt wheels. What kinds of things/headaches are involved to change to different hubs(?). I want to be able to find brake parts etc. I want to change to 5 bolt 14/15 inch wheels. I am not that versed yet with corvairs.

Thanks

Rob

You can't easily change hubs from EM to LM.

If you search Google you will see that unless you are racing or plan severe duty use you are far better to have the hubs re-drilled for 5-lug or run 4-5 bolt adapters (although some people don't care for those and also don't like losing some back space options when you have an adapter in place). Personally, I woud re-drill for 5 lug and be satisfied.

There are many good options for upgrading to larger-diameter wheels and tires on Early Model Corvairs, without the necessity of changing to five-lug wheels and hubs. Brake supplies for EM brake assemblies do not necessarily appear to be in short supply either. Recommend you read the following article about upgrading EM and LM wheels and tires...

This Web site seems to have the most comprehensive and well-researched data for fitting various tires and wheels to EM (Early Model, 1960-64) and LM (Late Model, 1965-69) Corvairs:

Thanks for the great information. I am mainly concerned about finding new drums and stuff. Am I correct in thinking that all the brake stuff with the exception of Drums can be found new? Shoes rebuilt kits, etc....

Thanks again

I believe that properly inspected, cleaned and turned used drums are just fine for use on a Corvair. The other parts all seem to be readily available as new components...

And of course, many parts are also available at other Corvair parts specialists, such as Rafee Corvair, California Corvairs, Corvair Underground, Corvair Ranch, etc. (Even eBay!)
