Turn signal suggestions?

Post by God.favored »

So I've had problems with my turn signals since I got the car, but now they totally stopped working, so I pulled the steering wheel of to try and figure out what was going on and found out that these things are cable operated? Well that cable is shot... I think... Anyone know of a completely electrical replacement for these? Or am I better off trying to find an original replacement?

Just stick with the original type. The EM cable type turn signal switch is actually very reliable and serviceable, the LM more modern type is the one that stinks!

The EM rarely needs parts replaced... usually you can just take it apart, clean it, apply new dielectric grease, and reassemble.

The key to the whole thing is the connection of the cable to the switch. When installed incorrectly (easy to do) the wire slips in the little grip and the turn signals do funny things.

If nobody else chimes in with detailed instructions I'll go take some pics and refresh my memory... I fixed the one on the 63 about a year ago and didn't have to buy anything (I had the grease, you might need to buy that).

In the meantime, tell me why you think the cable is bad so I can let you know if it is or isn't. Most likely it's just not installed properly.

Just to provide an option if you care to, but somebody put an old school signal stat on mine. Looks like they were having cable problems and just unscrewed the stalk, cut the wires going to the plug at the column and wired this up. I plan to undo all this and fix the factory stuff one of these days. This works fine but doesn't cancel and I find myself driving with the signals on....

Well the shielding around the cable is pretty trashed, but I think I can get it to work, just saw that one of those guides that holds the shielding to the column broke off and its not letting the cable actually slide inside the shield. I think I just need to fix that but...

All I have right now is my stick welder and i don't think I can weld something that thin with it, anyone have some suggestions for that?

yeah that little guide/holder thingy is key. I'll have to go look at one of my EM cars and see if I come up with any ideas.

Again, I have to go look and see what the assembly looks like but this isn't a very common part to break so I bet a used one from "The Corvair Ranch" would be pretty reasonable... get the cable and whatever the guide is a part of.

Thanks man, I really appreciate it.... We're having some pretty crazy wind out here so my school got cancelled and I don't have work, might have to brave the wind and get some work done on the car

Ok I figured out next to the switch, but I can't get the cable sleeve to stay in place next to the column is there something that is supposed to hold it inside that cover maybe?

I can't really be quite sure, can you take a photo of what you have so I can look at it for you?

Hey sorry I never got that picture up, I was going to take one but it stopped slipping out:)
Do you happen to know how the wiring works on that switch? (well what wire "should be" what). I'm going to do some re-wiring under the dash and it would really help save some time if I knew what was what for the turn signals

I had a very similar problem. My problem was that the screw, down on the switch, that holds the cable housing in place had come out - allowing the housing to move up and down when it needed to held in place. After I put in a screw, all was good. I would think if the cable housing is held tight at the switch, it should work even if it is loose along the column.
Good luck,
Ron
