140 4spd engine with automatic cam?

Post by Velosopher »

I am looking at purchasing a rebuilt 140. The owner says it was cammed for an auto.
In my car it will be mated to '65 4spd, how can I expect it to behave/perform?
Is it true I will have better low end? Do I sacrifice much mid/top end?
Thanks in advance.

I think there is a pretty big demand for the PG 140's... it might be best for you to see if you can trade it or sell it to someone who really needs it and use the proceeds to buy yourself a normal 140.

From what I've been told you will indeed have more grunt down low but it flattens out really suddenly at relatively low RPM. If you are looking for performance you will probably be disappointed. If all you care about is drivability and you are one of those people who never floors the "go pedal" you will probably find it satisfactory.

Short answer: YES! You will sacrifice a LOT of mid/top end! This engine has a milder cam (the 95hp cam I think), timed differently. They had to do this in order for the 140 to not have trouble pulling away from stop signs and lights etc... the 140 likes RPM and an auto trans really lugs it down.

I put one in the 140 in my panel van about a decade and a half ago, and as I recall, its a 110 that is retarded some 4 or 6 degrees. In a pinch, you could advance the cam gear by a tooth (approx. 10 or 11 deg.) and get a net advance. Mine hasn't blown up yet.
Keep 'em flying...
