Possible REVERSE rotation A/C compressor to replace Sanden

Post by 66vairguy »

Not sure how many are interested in Corvair A/C. Clark's sells a kit, and parts to modify the stock system to R134a with a Sanden compressor.

Years ago Clark's used the Sanden SD5H five cylinder compressor because it could rotate CW or CCW (Corvair). There were numerous complaints that the SD5H got "noisy" after awhile. I know mine developed a nasty "growl" sound on and off. Seems other car forums noted this issue on other cars.

Next Clark's went to the Sanden SD7H seven cylinder compressor, BUT it is only rated for CW use!!! Folks reported Sanden's tech service said they will run CCW, but won't last as long - hmmmm.

Recently I ordered a Sanden SD7H due to a failed NEW expansion valve that caused the compressor to overheat and fail.
I was talking to an A/C supplier and he asked what car I had. I told him a 66 Chevy Corvair - WELL!!! He got enthusiastic and said he knew the car and yes the CCW compressor rotation was an issue for the Corvair and remembered the "special Corvair" Frigidaire A6. He recommended a heavy duty unit that TURNS CW OR CCW as it has a HD piston swash plate. These units are used as OEM on trucks and industrial tractors. I'm getting the drawings and specifications for fit and system compatibility.

So - anybody interested in what I find???

I will be interested to hear what you find. I have a knock off SD7 that I am hoping to use on my wagon project.

There are a number of "knock off SD7" compressors. I have no experience with them. Most are made in China so now their prices will go up. The Sanden I just bought was "Made in U.S.A." - although like most things some of the parts are probably made off shore.

I just got the drawing and manuals downloaded for the compressor recommended to me. It IS NOT built like the Sanden, but a preliminary look indicates the mounting ears dimensions are the same so it should work with the Clark's mounting brackets - maybe. It reminds of the old Frigidaire A6 design, but a lot lighter!!

I bought mine a few years ago at this point, it was around $180. I have few friends who have had really good luck with them. Post a picture of the new pump if you can.

Thanks for the input. I've never heard about a problem with the Sanden look alikes. They tend to sell about 10% less than the Sanden, but now with the tariff nonsense it is hard to say what prices will be. Most economists say Trump will roll back the China tariffs as Chinal has the advantage, Trump has already rolled back tariffs on China made computers and Apple phones.

Well only one person interested so far in alternative. That said I will keep at it as time permits, but other things take priority at the moment.

Finally warming up here later this week and I've got a lot to catch up on. One caveat on the reverse rotation is the comment "must use correct clutch for either CW or CCW rotation", but no mention about what the part numbers are!!!!. So some research to do before this looks valid. I really do not want to "speculate" until I have all the numbers.

I solved all the problems with C/W / CCW compressors by going with a trunk mounted electric compressor, front mounted dryer and front mounted condenser. There is now no A/C components on my turbo / 4 carb Corsa engine. I'm happy with my A/C system now.

Great solution for a turbo!!! What is the voltage and wattage required. What is name and model? Did you have to upgrade alternator?
