Oil pump primer tool/shaft
Oil pump primer tool/shaft
I am going to make my own oil pump primer tool/shaft.
How long does the shaft need to be?

I would just take the handle off the yellow screwdriver and call it a day. The oil pump is about 7" inside plus you need some room on the outside for your drill motor.
Plan B; strip an old distributor and use the shaft as an oil pump priming tool. This approach has less chance of damaging the accessory housing .

Re: Oil pump primer tool/shaft
The better tool to make would probably be one from an old distributer.
The second bearing surface for the distributer shaft is the bore at the bottom to the oil pump. Running a loose screwdriver shaft around in there could damage that bore.

This is what I use (make certain shaft is well lubricated):

AGREE!!! There are old distributors that folks do not want that you can strip down for a priming tool. All you need is the distributor shaft and housing. Not expensive and easier than trying to make a took that could damage the ALUMINUM bore at the oil pump housing.TimeMachineParadox wrote: ↑Wed Mar 05, 2025 11:47 am The better tool to make would probably be one from an old distributer.

Re: Oil pump primer tool/shaft
If you don't have an old distributor shaft and don't have access to one, al least round off any corners on the sides of the end of the screwdriver so they don't catch or damage the bearing surfaces.

No, No, NO! on using a screwdriver!
Anyone that wants a priming tool I e=will make them one, $19 plush the shipping. I owe one persone one and it has been long enough that he will get it for free!
Why no screwdriver? Where the oil pump drive is, is a bushing. If you score that or even shave it out the the distributor will not have a good lower bushing.

Re: Oil pump primer tool/shaft
I use an old distributor with the body and everything but the point plate removed.
For some reason way back whenever I started using it I ground the teeth off the gear rather than just removing it. Maybe I didn't have a small punch to remove the roll pin.
