Corvair 95 front disc question

Post by Racemaster »

I’ve been out of the game a while and getting back into 95’s. Years ago I was planning to convert one of my Rsmpy’s to front disc. I bought brackets, hoses, etc for a 1955-68 Chevy full size car. I never took them out of the box. Now I can’t remember the whole combo. What rotors, bearings,, and calipers do I use ??? Has anyone gone down this road? Can you get me back on track?
Thanks I’m advance

I put front disc brakes on a Rampside for a guy using Clarks kit. It came with a recipe for other parts to buy, as in rotors, calipers and hoses. He also had to buy different 14" steel wheels for the front, the 5" wide FC wheels wouldn't work.
I wrote all the stuff down but don't know offhand where I put the paper.

This is probably different than your situation where you bought Chevy stuff. You say 55-68 but I think that's too big a range. When I looked into what to buy I thought it was just a few years around 58 or so.
On FC both ball joints point down. I don't know a lot about regular Chevrolets but that seems unusual to me.

When doing disc brakes on my LM race car the first design had Big GM calipers like from a Chevelle and the rotors were integral to the hub. This increased the front track a little, I don't remember how much, something less than 1/2" per side. They came used from Jeff Moore and he got them used from Doug Hargrove.
My second design used Scarebird caliper brackets, GM Metric calipers and S-10 4WD rotors that slip on the Corvair hubs.

When I looked into doing the 58 Chevy thing I planned to get parts from Summit or Jegs. If that's where yours came from they may be able to help you select the parts you need. My reason for going this route was to also use drop spindles.

I corresponded with a guy on the other forum who was well versed in this stuff. Before all the old information was lost I saved a lot of it but then I'm back to not knowing offhand what I did with it.

While I don't have answers for you I hope it helps you form questions. No use speculating very far until you know what you've got there.

Here's some notes I have on FC front discs from a forum post from years ago, use at your own risk
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Speedway has disc brake kits, they have two versions, one for large body calipers and one for the smaller body metric caliper. You need to tell them you are converting your 1957 Chevy with stock spindles to disc brakes. Yup bolts right on. If you are able to to a little milling, you can even keep alloy 14 inch wheels.
If you want to buy the pieces locally, the rotors are 69 Chevelle rotors, the large body calipers are 69 Chevelle calipers the small metric calipers are Monte Carlo calipers. The brackets can be purchased separately from Speedway.

Front brakes are 69 Chevelle, rear brakes are just like 69 Chevelle, proportioning valve is 69 Chevelle. wonder what master cylinder would work ?
Hint hint, dont tell them you have a Corvair. Remember 1957 Chevy.

I have 14 inch alloy wheels over my FC disc brakes. You are correct in saying the original steel wheels wont clear.
I tracked down the guy who made the disc brake brackets for Clarks and others. He was finished with that venture, and will never make any more,he gave the blueprints and prototypes to another guy. I tracked the next guy down and he was not capable of production at this time. That is when I realized the 57 chevy spindles are the same as the FC, ( except for ball joint taper.
The brackets are $99 from Speedway, they are gold cad plated and come with all new grade eight hardware.
I am positive Lon can build a great kit, but how does anyone beat $99 ?

Nova 14" steel rally wheels clear the speedway kit and I can still use my 14" 3 prong spinner caps.I will never own a FC without front disc brakes after my install of this kit.Did it 3 years ago and still perfect.I believe I used a 1975 nova manual disc brake master cyl. Damian, track is increased by 3/4" each side. Toe must be reset.

Speedway complete kit Part # 91031949 $259.99
Speedway caliper brackets art # 91631915 $79.99

Yes I believe martyscarr is who I corresponded with on the other forum. I think he had a lot of good stuff on Fastvairs as well.

I used ValVairworks brackets to install Wilwood rotors/calipers on my 65 Monza. Not sure if he has brackets for your model but would definitely use them again.
