Engine compartment paint
Engine compartment paint
On my '65 Corsa vert I've finished the exterior and trunk paint with the original paint codes for the exterior Glacier Gray and different shades of black interior paint. It's all as I remember. Now for the engine compartment. Does anyone know the paint code for the black used on the shrouds, etc.? I see that Clark's sells a Rust-oleum semi-gloss black but I'd really like to use what GM used if I can find it. Thanks in advance.

Re: Engine compartment paint
I looked in my copy of The 1960-1969 Corvair. I didn't see any reference to engine compartment/shroud paint, but the Clark's Corvair catalog does list a semi-gloss black paint they state is "98% identical to factory paint". Their part# for the paint is C1325

I'm kinda surprised Clark's endorses that generic Rustoleum acrylic enamel for engine shrouds. I've tried engine paint, which doesn't last very long. Gas & oil WILL get on engine shrouds, I would think some kind of specialty paint would be in order here, preferably powder coating. Have you guys actually tried that Rustoleum?

Re: Engine compartment paint
I have used this paint on the engine bay but NOT on shrouds. It is ok I guess. It seems to be a little glossy and mars easily. I have found that VHT Roll Bar and Chassis black epoxy in satin is close to the same gloss level (a hair less shiny) and is harder and muchmore durable. It functions ok on shrouds as well. I highly recommend what most powdercoaters call matte black in powdercoat for the shrouds. Powdercoating if in the budget is the best (not terribly expensive here, my guy blasts and coats a full set of engine sheet metal (like 30+ pieces) for well under $300. No high temp paint is needed on the bay or the shrouds.erco wrote: ↑Thu Dec 30, 2021 4:53 pm I'm kinda surprised Clark's endorses that generic Rustoleum acrylic enamel for engine shrouds. This photo is powdercoated shrouds with VHT on the engine bay.
