AR 15 , shooting can, having fun ! Blowing some steam

Post by Butcher&Vairs »

Bitchin' Sunday afternoon at the Apache trail ranch in the Heartland of the USA.
Where is everybody ? No one to talk to , so I guess I'm gonna go blow some steam by the lake. Peace out, Vair fellows.
Hey Scott, instead of "off topic" , "garage talk " would be awesome, not "trash talk" ,

Yeah, it is a lot of fun to shoot. I used to have a friend who owned an AK 47 , it' s also a lot of fun. It has more kick than the AR. You'd be surprised how relaxed you feel after shooting a couple of rounds. Besides playing with my Vairs, that's one of my hobbies here in the country, no yoga class for me !
Keep them rolling, peace out !

I don't know what to think about you guys with assualt rifles -- I only need one shot ! 8-)

Better start saving that ammo. The constitution says you can have guns but it doesn't say anything about bullets !

I do own 1 semi-auto gun . It's a Desert Eagle 44 mag pistol with a red dot sight.

It goes thru ammo pretty fast if you can afford the lead. Holds 9 and goes as fast as you can pull trigger.
For hunting I use an old bolt action Winchester 300 magnum. It will do the job on any North American game.

Also got an old 12 gage pump but I've only duck hunted once and I don't hunt at all any more. Just getting to be too hard to walk up the mountains and pack em back down. No such thing as throwing them in the back of a truck up here.
A deer hunt usually includes a very chilly early boat ride in a small skiff to a neighboring island and the a long hike up some brutal mountains and you have to be out of the woods by 2 pm because it's dark by 3 pm.

The deer up here are very small compared to Mule and Whitetails. They are in the whitetail family but are called Sitka Black Tails . Not to be confused with the Hoonah Split-tails !

I've eaten that wild boar before and it was great . Melts in your mouth !

No Rafman - the photo is my dad and was taken over 50 years ago on Kodiak island . Kodiak is well known for having some of the largest brown/Grizzly bear in the world.
The one in the pic is HUGE !

Here's a pic I snipped from some old video tape. The guy is straddling a decent size brown bear. It looks absolutely tiny in comparison.
barry bear snap.JPG
The Brown Bear are not considered edible and there is no requirement to salvage any of the meat and no one I know does. You are required to have a bear tag. Then you must skin it and you have to take the skull to Fish & Game to have it "sealed" . They remove and keep 1 tooth for data.

Black bears ( like the ones I have in my yard all the time) are considered edible part of the year(spring I think ,CRS). During that season you are required to keep the meat. I've eaten Black Bear and I didn't care for it ! They think that your boar is "Gamey" - they should try bear !

The deer season runs from mid August thru December. Bucks only until October and then anything that moves . I think we're down to 4 a year but I remember when we got 6 tags a year.

Goat and Elk are good but Moose is the best. They are huge and you almost have to see one in person to grasp it. They dwarf a large horse.

I prefer fishing to hunting myself. I'm not just talking about casting lures but also things like dragging a trawl net in 2 or 3 hundred feet of water for shrimp - pulling crab pots for different crabs and dip netting or spearing Sockeye salmon in the creek when they're spawning. Usually competing with bear for fish. You fish with a pistol on your hip around here.

Here's the view from my front door.

And a few more assorted pics. Kevin

Black bear here. I've tried it and didn't like it.

Moose is ok, like the white tails we have, it depends on what they have been eating that effects the taste. 6 or so white tails around my house, used to be an apple orchard here and there are still a few staggared trees around.

We have a long hunting season up here . Towards mid to late November when the bucks are getting into serious Rut mode the meat becomes so gamey that I won't even eat it.

I'm not real big on deer meat to start with. I'll take the backstraps, the heart and the rump roasts. The rest I used to usually give away but sometimes I'd have sausages ,Pepperonis or jerky made with it.

When you get right down to it - I like Cow !

Now - seafood , that's a different story. You haven't lived until you had fresh crab, shrimp, and scallops that you just caught cooked in a big beer keg on the beach !

No offence taken, I don't care for lobster.....

Same here, I'll stick with cow. :)

Don't mind a nice trout once in a while tho.

:assault: Cool pix, Kevin ! I have never tried bear or moose, cause I have not had the chance, I am pretty much down to try anything; Here I have tried Armadillo, one of the reasons that made me try is that many idiot folks kept telling me it taste like chicken, they say that about alligator, frog legs, rabbit, anything....Armadillo has a unique taste, it tastes like armadillo, each meat tastes different. I also tried boiled snake, maybe it was the way I cooked, I pass on that. I tried snapping turtle, pass on that too, and so did my dogs, I thought they were gonna jump me for serving them that. One of the most unique fish I have tried here is the gar fish, the one wanna be crocodile, with the long snout/mouth full of teeth, and the armor-like scales, tastes good ,man, real firm , just saute in the pan with lemon. Around here , most people won't touch it, cleaning them is a bitch, not to mention catching them , they sure put up a fight !!!
It's good to know some of you guys enjoy shooting their gun , like I do, and trying different species of game. Nice toy, Scott !
Alright, I'm out of here, peace out !

I've got the ones in my back yard. Not sure how many are still around, there were about 7 deer at one point. I honestly don't have the heart to get these ones. I enjoy seeing them around the house..
