An incredible career of high achievement ! :tu:
!

!
Long ago, in '64, Ed Cole developed the air cooled twin turbo V8, equipped with a unique McPherson strut independent rear suspension.
Mid engine placement, utilizing the new 5 speed transaxle, on a shortened wheelbase chassis.
Sporty Spyder and Targa models, two seaters for the growing pony car market in direct competition with the new Mustang from Ford.
Sharp handling, fast, quick with optional limited slip differential and competition gearing and new wide radial tires.
Zora Arkus-Duntov had engineered the Rochester fuel injected 296 Hemi headed V8 to spin to heavenly songs at the GM testing track, the press astounded at the G's while trying to break the rear end loose on the skid pad.
' This is the best handling production car I have ever driven ! ' said the recent LeMans pole winner, the grin attesting to the incredible performance of the newest addition to the Corvair lineup.
The rear end has been given a facelift with three large tail lights on both corners, much like the showcar of '63, distinctive, the throaty rumble of the exhausts muted by the ' catalytic converters ', a new kind of muffler built by Chevrolet.
Projected sales and recent enthusiasm of showroom buyers has encouraged the corporate board to re-enter racing competition.
The Corvair Spyder has all the right stuff !

The new for 1965 V8 Corvair from Chevrolet, with factory competition options, the Duntov 296 Hemi screams to 120mph in 10.9 sec, the hottest sports car from American manufacturers.

A custom early, from a '65 GM styling viewpoint, inspired by the Black's 427 LM, the treatment of the grille, awesome work.
Back then, it was all shiny chrome and stamped grilles, still loved to this day, lol.
Re-imagining the factory's decision to stop the production of the early model while sending the late models to the showroom floors.
A retrospective drawing, the two seat Corvair they showed, but never did produce, what the stylists might have done for a '65 Targa.
EarlyCorvairGrille-19.jpg
This was fun to draw, a quick and dirty paint by numbers version, to get the vision across.
The nose has been given a more pointed shape, as was the norm back then, and why the LM, has the shark's leading edge.
The headlamps are staggered, the outers an inch behind the inners, almost tangent, the more squared off look carried over from the '65 Impala's new face. The 296 Hemi, larger than the 289 of the new Mustang, turbo-supercharged with the SOHC heads of the Astro, revving way up to ten.
What didn't happen, though it could have, should have, lol.
Pontiac's Tempest has that sharper edged look that was the early '60's.

A blown air-cooled V8 to make it a race at the strip.

Sort of inspired by a '64 Chevelle grille, like a facia, face of the Chevrolet product line.
Still looks so very '60s.
Air Cooled Small Block, sohc heads of the Astro, 296 revs happily to ten.
Retaining the 4.85 bore spacing and 3.685 bore seat height of the 164 six.
Replicating the Astro heads using Chevy parts produced since the '60s, cheap and plentiful.
4" bore, X 2.94 stroke = 296"

The key ingredient is the permeable coating.
;)
Designing, modeling then, pouring canted three valve ohc cylinder heads for ' big block ' air cooled engines.

Years of pleasant work resulting in mid-engine early Corvairs, late models too.
Beginning with big block Chevy crankshafts, because the bore spacing is near identical 4.84" to the Corvair's 4.85".

Valkry9 - The red "Petite" mid engine drawing reminds me of a picture of a Corvair next to the 67 Camaro clay at the GM studios.
If you take your red "Petite" car and extend the front end forward of the windshield and door line, put a thick "C" pillar in and you'll have a look similar to the 67 Camaro. Most folks don't realize how much the Corvair influenced the early Camaro. '

Yep. :)
GM likely went with what they had, the doors virtually identical, perhaps a few die-set changes, to economize on the the production line.
Here is the '67 roofline welded into place on the EM body, conveniently close in dimensions, a nice matchup, the hardtop similar to the '64 convertible's profile, a little more slope to the rear glass, more fastback.
A ton of work, front cowl to rear decklid, much measuring hammering and welding, for a custom special.
The convertible's contrasting color and texture might make a vinyl covering a looker, accenting the rear flank, the visual detail denoting the model's hi-po engine package, the 296 SOHC Hemi.
:)
EMYellowVert-09.jpg
A slight lengthening of the roof skin, the rear sails sloping to the tail's top tangent skin, more fastback.
A deep brown vinyl applique, complementing the interior's naugahyde and fabric upholstery, with stitching and pleats, sumptuous comfort,
Rollbars integrated into the roof, fit unobtrusively for structural stiffness corner to corner, enhanced crash safety and survivability, all good.

Monza-900-63-03.jpg
Custom led tail lights, molded tinted uv resistant.
Rear bumper top mimics the trunk's curvature, painted composite.
Rear impact bumper hidden beneath, good for softening the blow.
244in^3, 4 L big six with a five speed, disk brakes, McPherson strut rear suspension mods.
The sum makes a decent handling early Corvair, relatively economically.
All things being relative, curves too.

Weight reduction to <1800 lbs, 820kg, using the new epoxy resins available in 1962, stronger and lighter than the polyesters popular with marine manufacturers.
Magnesium wheels from Halibrand 17" x 8" f, 17" x 10"r, mounting road race gummies, the suspension updated to handle the gees.
