Back in 2004 I was at my Senior Lake Day at Folsom Lake, CA. It's the big all day party before the grad ceremony. Just about everyone at my school hated my old '64 Monza Coupe, so I was constantly defending her. Well I had parked in the sand at the bottom of the boat ramp with all of my other class mates.
As we were all leaving, one of my class mates yelled out a challenge for anyone to race him to the top of the hill. He wanted to take this section that was probably 300ft. long and gradually sloping up to about 45*. It was deep dry sand. The kid who thought this whole thing up was in a late 90's Tacoma 5spd 4x4. The 3 other cars included: My 110/pg/3.55 open diff Monza, '89 S10 4.3 2wd, '95 Forester.
3 honks, and we GO! The taco and the forester had the holeshot. followed by me, then the s10 barely moving spinning tires. As the grade increased, the forester slowly dropped back. I passed the Taco in about the last 50ft, and took the win!
It wasn't by much, but I still won. It's amazing what weight distribution can do for a low powered car, especially one with a 2spd auto. ggg. I BEAT OUT A 4WD & A AWD, HAHAHAHA!!!

Re: Sand Drag
Sweet Revenge.
I have a 64 110 4spd, in my backyard...the more I look at her the more I want to quit working on my 65 and get the 64 going.

Re: Sand Drag
Yeah it's hard to beat the Vair's traction but having owned several 4X4 Toyotas including my Current 2007 Tundra ---
I gotta wonder what was wrong with the "Taco" ? 8-) Was the driver drunk ? ;)
I had a Black 97 Taco with the V6 and it was pretty quick even in the snow.
Vair's and Toyotas forever !!!!!! :D
I drove my old 67 Monza everyday for almost ten years including our Alaskan winters. I would put skinny studded snow tires on all 4 wheels and it would go anywhere as long as it didn't high center in deep snow.
Almost all of the early Corvair advertising related to it's traction advantage over it's competition.
Here' two videos that highlight the Vairs traction. Watch it pull an airliner or drag race Falcons and Valiants on a slippery football field.
