New to the Forum
Greetings from the surface of the sun! (Phoenix) Proud new owner of a 1965 Corvair Monza! LA #7277, red on red, 110, AT, 114k Box A miles. Fast learner, but new to the mechanics of the Corvair. Grandfather was a crane operator (but a grease monkey at heart) but my dad was a salesman, so I learned that when you heard a funny noise, you take it to a mechanic. Within reason, I'd really like to do a lot of the work myself, but I do know my limitations. The forum has been a great read for the last week or so, and I'm looking forward to getting some great advise and being a part of the Corvair family.
The Reader's Digest condensed version of my Corvair's condition: Looks great from 15 feet, but needs some work inside and out. Runs pretty well, but idles too low to the point of dying unless I stay on the gas. Been reading quite a bit about 2-carb balance and idle issues on the forum, so I will probably start there. Has a couple of leaks (oil). One at the oil pressure switch base, and one below engine on right/passenger side (gasket?) Neither one severe, but need to be addressed. Want to keep it close to original in appearance. Needed tires (current set were pretty dried out) so ordered 185/80/R13s per the recommendations seen on this site.
Here's a few pics, with the switch leak last. See you in the funny papers.

Welcome and wow, what a beautiful car! There's a lot of great info on this site and I've found Corvair owners are second to none when it comes to helpfulness. Local Corvair Club is a great place to start for any issues.
Where did you get that carpet for you trunk? I need one of them for mine.

Looks like a great car! Welcome to the Forum. The oil pressure switch leak is easily repaired. Most auto parts stores have the switch in stock.
Usually less than $10.00
Other common leaks usually involve the valve cover gaskets.

Appreciate the welcome, guys!
Chris: The carpet liner came with the car, so I'm not sure where to get one. It's out there somewhere, though, so best of luck!
Jerry: Appreciate the info! My wife's family lives in Hemet! Small world! With your experience, I'll bet your 'Vairs run like a top!

Nice ride! Waving at you from over here in Gilbert!
The local club doesn't hold official events over the summer but you may still see some of us out and about at local cruise-ins and such. A few people said they would go to the Saturday Night Cruise at the Mixteca Restaurant near Bell and 67th this Saturday evening.

Thanks Dave! Appreciate the tip. I was just looking at the schedule for the club and we were planning to hit the Mixteca cruise in to see if any club members were there. Either way, we'll be on the lookout for you guys!

Cathy and I would be there in her 65 4-door (A/C) except for two birthday parties that evening.VairITable65 wrote: ↑Mon May 14, 2018 9:35 pm ...we were planning to hit the Mixteca cruise in to see if any club members were there.

Personally, I'd lose the extension pipe with the oil pressure sender. All that weight and vibration can snap that pipe off and the oil mess is something you don't want to mess with along with the lack of lubrication to your main bearings and lifters before you shut it off. Many folks who desire an oil pressure gauge have gone to a stainless steel braided hose and mount it remotely, like on the other side of the alternator. I'll see if I can find a link to an example. I had one of those and I broke off the pipe not once, but twice in my old 68 Monza.
Other than that, nice looking Monza! center mount brake light is a nice addition, something I've considered mounting inside the car to the top of the rear window of my '65.
On the other Corvair forum, look at RobertC's photo for the braided hose solution.

Re: New to the Forum
Oh, and another thing: That silver hose that leaves the engine compartment is a non-stock replacement hose. I recommend replacing it with the stock hose OR Dave Watson has a nice block-off plate for the engine and the firewall, and replace the hose under the car where it attaches to the heater box with an air filter. Any air leaks there will compromise cooling for the #5 cylinder.
I can't find a post with those pictures right at the moment.
