Some of you may be following my honda swapped corvair, Sadly i progress has been stunted as i am trying to deal with differential issues this summer
Here is how it has seamed to happen every time.
I set up a new ring and pinion inside the old diff housing, Shim, everything to spec, check wear pattern, install into car
about 200 miles later, the pinion has lost its preload. This usally happens after some miles on the highway when the trans gets warmer. Soon after this i need a new ring and pinion. I am on the 4th set this summer. (all have been used gears)
when draining the fluid TONS of shavings come out. literally the ring and pinion are eating themself alive, and this isnt even during hard miles, just driving around you can hear an audible whine. that gets worse every mile you drive it.
Has anybody ever heard of a case failure/warping? as of now this is the only part that is constant in this process.
also, is there anybody in the MA/ri/NH area that is good with setting these differentials up, i need a second set of eyes

Rear differential frustration
Honda B20 turbo powered corvair. Is it the first honda powered corvair out there?
Re: Rear differential frustration
I would probably avoid used gears. You're changing the ring and the pinion? Are you sure you're setting it up right? I've never done a corvair but I have done many others. Are you using grease or paint to see how your teeth alignment are after everything is set?MikeDTuning wrote:Some of you may be following my honda swapped corvair, Sadly i progress has been stunted as i am trying to deal with differential issues this summer

Re: Rear differential frustration
I had a '65 GB that was having diff problems for the new owner. He found the diff casting was riddled with "invisible" cracks. I'd swap out the entire unit at this point. Also, be aware there are different length pinion shafts ('65 shafts are a little longer). When a long pinion is combined with a '66 up trans, it puts the pinion bearings in a bind. There is also a different pinion adjusting sleeve for '66 up. Is your transaxle all from the same year?
