140 carb linkage

Post by junkyardkustoms »

Could anyone help me out. I'm working on putting my carbs back on and could use a picture (or a few) of the linkage. I just don't want to get it together and find that something is backwards or on the wrong side. Thank you.

You did not say what model year. There were some changes made in 1966 and later 140 hp engine carburetor linkage configurations. The diagrams in the attached 1965 Corvair Assembly Manual - CARBURETOR & FUEL SYSTEM show the original 1965 configuration. Page 12 of the second attachment, DELCO ROCHESTER - Models H, HV Carburetor Service Manual, has some illustrations that show the changes that were made in the secondary carburetor linkages in later years.

Hopefully the illustrations in the above manuals will help you.

Sorry, it's a '65. But thank you for the links. I'll take a look.

I looked over the PDF's and I can see the linkage, but not clearly. I know something is wrong on my setup. I'd still like some pictures if anyone could help me out. Thanks.

Do the primary carbs work alright with the setup you have? I see you are missing the connecting link on the RH secondary carb.

I believe in your picture that the throttle actuation rod is inserted in the wrong direction. It should be inserted with the swivel pointed toward the fan. Then the throttle return spring is inserted through the hole in the swivel. The other end of the spring is connected to the tab that is attached to the perimeter sheet metal.

I find the rid for that secondary carb, so it's on now. Good point about the swivel though, I'll flip it over. I'm sure the spring will align better now.

And the throttle is less likely to bind from possible contact with the engine shroud as it is going thru off center in the photo.

Ok, I have a new issue. I got my linkage sorted out (thank you). But tonight after priming the lines that had gone completely dry since sitting, I got it started and found that my right side secondary carb was puking fuel all over. Carb throat completely filed with gasoline and gushing over. I think it was coming out of the vent tube, at least partially. What is that indicative of?

Stuck float? Before you dig into it, try rapping it a couple of times with a rubber mallet. Sometimes that will work, and once they get wet and unstuck, it'll be fine.

Thanks, I'll give that a try. If it doesn't work, I'll pull off the top and recheck the float. Maybe it's got a crack or something showing it to fill with fuel. When I was putting them together, I did notice that the flats on the secondaries were different. They didn't have a spring on the float pin and the tab on the rear (that adjusts for float drop) was bent up instead of down. So float just swings freely instead of having a specific drop. Is that supposed to be like that?

Oh my gosh, I think I just answered my question. After looking at pictures online, I saw one with the same tang. Turns out the float is upside down in the picture.....so mine must be upside down. Lol. I'll have to flip those over. I just thought it was supposed to be that way since it was on both secondaries.
