Production of 140 HP Corvairs after 1966
Production of 140 HP Corvairs after 1966
Hello,
In my standard catalog of american cars it says the 140-4 carb engine was available as an option for the 67-69 model years; however, I have never seen one originally made that way. Is anyone aware if this is true, and, if so, how many may have been made like that? Interested in a LM rag, right now leaning toward a non-turbo Corsa but would like to keep my options open (no pun intended).

140 engines were off the RPO list for the first part of '67, then it came back as a COPO* mid year. In '68 and '69 it was back to RPO status. (*COPO = Central Office Production Order, meaning it was available but not in the catalog, you had to beg the "Chevrolet central office" for one)
140s were about 7% options on 65/6 Monza/500 models but only 1% on '67 models. (source:http://corvairkid.com/65-67rpostat.htm ) I'm going to guess 68/9 went back to 7% or so when 140s were back to "regular production option" status. My wife had a nearly new '67 (purchased in '68) that had a 140 and I had a '69 convertible with an original 140. (Picture below)

I am in the process of convertible me 110 PG to a 140 4spd, pulled it from a junker 69 coupe. Made the conversion a lot easier since the pedals are unique to 67-69 and 69 has a one year only clutch cable!

Re: Production of 140 HP Corvairs after 1966
A 67 with a 140 is a VERY rare car. As noted, it was a special order via a special COPO code. Most of them went to Don Yenko. Kent Sullivan has it on his site here http://www.corvairkid.com/65-67rpostat.htm
Although they show 279 cars, they feel the number is much less than that.
As for 68 and 69's there were generous amounts produced both years but since total Corvair production was down both years I would say your chances of seeing one are that much slimmer.

Total 1965 Corsas made was 20,291 coupes and 8,353 convertibles (subtract the 7,206 with the turbo option from the total coupe and convert totals)Corsa bill wrote:I'm assuming there were a lot of 1965 verts made anyone know the number (140's) Corsa

As far as 140 engines on Monza and 500 models only.......
1965 was 18,273
1966 was 7,500
Dave Trull has a file he put together that has a further breakdown of the 65 and 66 Corsa models with production details/estimates of how many of each coupe and convertible with each engine at each plant. looking at it can make your head hurt! J/k!
You might want to try emailing him to get a copy of it.
