Re: '65 Monza project in the dry central valley CA
UPDATE:
Stripped rear doors to prep for paint. Removed hood for ease of prep for it and trunk area. Removed headlights and buckets and front end trim. Cut out bad section of drivers fender and fit donor piece. Same thing gonna happen in the drivers quarter panel/battery tray. Luckily car came with bot donor fender and rear quarter in good shape. Also...these two areas are the only body areas to repair.
Stay tuned...

Well....it has been a looming project for a while now, but finally started tackling it today. Luckily, my donor quarter panel is in great shape. Underneath my roached fender, was a roached battery tray and related structure. I tried to keep as much of the pinch weld areas of the assy. i am going to weld in, i just have to negotiate taking the old one out. I have seams to guide me tho...it should go well. Thanks to Mart and Steve H for your posts and pics of this area.

Re: '65 Monza project in the dry central valley CA
Got out today and got some more work done on the quarter panel/battery tray. Did some hammering on the donor piece, and cleaned it up for install. Cut out the existing battery tray, and cleaned up the area. Had to get out the gas wrench, to help remove all of the battery tray.
Tried to fit the donor from the bottom, but couldnt quite stretch the wheel well over the tabs in the front. So...i decided to go down from the inside. It took a little fudging, and persuasion...but she finally popped onto place. I have a little trim work to do, but it looks good. I did, however, find that not all battery trays are created equal. I need to form a shim piece, so that it fits snug up against the outside of the "frame" rail. Good thing i know a good fabricator.
Gonna do the final trimming and welding tomorrow.

Re: '65 Monza project in the dry central valley CA
The boy came up to help in the garage this weekend. Yesterday, we got the lower panel/battery tray trimmed and tacked in. Gonna finish stitching it in today. It is not as wide as the one i took out, so im going to have to fab a shim piece to go beyween the right pinch weld and the "frame" rail. So there will be a double pinch weld there. Not real noticable, and it will be strong. Also, thought about it, and decided to tear down the 140 buggy engine, i have slated for this thing. I wanted to see what cam the PO had in it, as well as clean all the sand out of everything. Lol. Parts are coming in that i have to add anyway, and i want to build this engine right, so it will be reliable.
Stay tuned....

Re: '65 Monza project in the dry central valley CA
Finally got the lpwer quarter all welded in and blended. This pic is without body filler or feather fill yet. It came out pretty good (IIDSSM). =D
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and welcome.
As for exterior body work...thats all the major stuff for now. I am working on a stainless, lower windshield frame piece, so theres that to come too. I am in the midst of designing a custom dashboard now. Since the PO had a plank of Maple in there and needs some tlc. I am a metal guy, so thats what im going with.
Thanks for the comments,
Stay tuned..
Been contemplating the engine build. Its gonna be a 140 MT, but i want it to be a reliable freeway runner. I have a 26mi. one way commute M-F, and this will be the wifes car, so i am putting AC in it as well. Any recommendations would be great. I am searching for a NOS 889 cam...i think that would be the ticket (from what i have been researching) I have also read about the 140 PH crank, and that with the 889 cam, it is a good combo for early power and low end torque. I have looked and the special crank is hard to find, so i have a regular one, and need a cam gear anyways...so i was thinking adjustable, from Ray at American-Pi.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and welcome.

Nice metal work! If I can ask, where do you source your replacement sheet metal? I'll be needing to do that soon.
I don't have any experience with the Clark's window sill replacement, but my first assignment with a shrinker/stretcher was a window sill replacement for a 70 Chevelle, and I had one made and tacked in place in about 2 hours on my first shot, could probably cut that in half now, and it fit perfectly. It looks like you know your way around metal working pretty well, you probably already have the tool?
Looking forward to what you create for your dash.

^ Thanks for the vote of confidence. I got lucky with this buy, it came with donor panels. I know that Davemotohead has panels for sale...maybe Corvairranch.com I have not ordered from Corvair Ranch, but i have heard good things. I am hitting a wall on the dash design, but hope to have it settled here real soon.

Re: '65 Monza project in the dry central valley CA
Been busy with Holidays and the weather has been keeping me away from the project. I have some time now, and so here is an update. I resigned myself to removing the rear and front suspension parts, so I can better access the undercarriage for sealing and paint.
So...getting everything pressure washed and cleaned up is the rule of the day now. Going through the brakes and suspension parts...and replacing bushings, grommets, etc. as needed. After that, gonna wire wheel all the old seam sealer out, in prep for new, and then a good prime and seal of the underside.
More to come...stay tuned...

I am happy to report, even tho the car had been sitting for quite some time out in the elements, and under a huge oak tree...the suspension parts, steering, and brakes are in really good shape(front and rear). Seems the PO had replaced parts, and powder coated metal as needed. W00T!!! Saving money is is a good thing.
So, front and rear suspension, steering, brakes...oh, and also fuel tank are all out of the car now. YIKES!!! There were three Black Widows sharing space above the fuel tank!!! I thought they were more territorial...
Gonna work on, what i call, a "rocker-style" rotisserie to work in my space. As you can see...i work out in the yard behind my garage...under a canopy. This should be interesting, since i have some scrap rings rolled out of some heavy gauge metal. Will post pix of that as i get it fabbed and figure a way to attach to car shell.So...getting everything pressure washed and cleaned up is the rule of the day now. Re: '65 Monza project in the dry central valley CA
I need to get access to the undercarriage, so i am planning on building a tilt up, or tip up rotissurie out of wood. https://youtu.be/70ggHl6GGZA" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
This seems the most economical, and practical, for my situation. I am planning it now, and will definitely post pics as soon as im ready to roll her up on her side.

Haven't been on here in awhile. That's really good work on pretty intensive repairs. I wish I had your skills!

Still working...today, lowered the rear end to flush out the rocker panels. Lots of gunk in there...i set up a "sloosebox" to take water out of the work area. Maybe there will be some gold in there somewhere... LOL!!!

Good idea on the water control
-When I did mine I found Monza emblem retainers (lazy body shop) & an extra rubber plug from the front rocker area.
