LM alternator wiring

Post by Reindeer »

I'm swapping out the alternator in my '65 Corsa turbo. When I pulled the plastic 2-prong plug out of the back, it cracked and broke apart. No big deal, the terminals fit tight on the prongs, problem is I didn't pay attention which wire goes to which terminal. Anybody know or can look at their car to tell me which wire goes where?

I'm referring to the 2 pin plug that plugs into the space on the top of the alternator in this picture.

With the alternator installed, (assuming a stock wiring harness) the blue wire goes on the top terminal of the 2-pin plug. The bottom wire is black with a white stripe I believe.

Good grief ---- please don't just put the connectors that "fit tight" on without the plastic plug. That a recipe for a disaster, trust me they will come loose or get mixed up.

Dorman makes a connector sold at most auto parts stores for a Delco 10DN alternator. It has the wires and connectors, just splice it in to the Corvair harness wires.

On a Corvair the BLACK/WHT STRIPE or WHITE wire (changed late 65) goes to the terminal marked "R" and is closest to the big power output terminal marked "BAT". The DARK BLUE wire goes to the terminal "F" which is clockwise from terminal "R". This same BLUE wire comes from the external regulator terminal "F".

You can GOOGLE images of a Delco 10DN alternator to see the marking if your alternator doesn't show them. Also diagrams.

I bet Brad will post the GM diagram.

durn it all--I've got correct Corvair 'back ends' that have the plastic part (that broke..) BE SURE TO CHECK the 'new' alternator to see if the "fan" blades are the right ones, they're "backwards" to everything else !!

I had no intention of driving it any distance without replacing the plug. Just for testing purposes to make sure it ran. I have the correct plug for it now.

I would have never thought to check that, thanks.

It is interesting that the factory schematic is confusing concerning the physical location of the "Field" wire, which connects from the right side of the alternator plug to the first pin on the voltage regulator (Blue Wire). The "Relay" (Black/White Wire) connects from the left side of the connector to pin 2 on the voltage regulator. The position of the two wires on the shop manual schematic appears to be reversed, but the photograph clearly shows which wire is connected to the "F" terminal. I also noted that many of the casting markings such as "Delco Remy", "GRD", "F", and "R" do not appear on your alternator, but are clearly shown on the original Corvair alternator in the photograph.

The 10DN alternator is still very popular and rebuilders are using new cases without the markings present on the old Delco units.

As Tom Z said the fan may be incorrect. AFAIK only the Corvair used the reverse rotation fan and the pulley and fan were two separate pieces. If a Corvair alternator is rebuilt and original fan or pulley are damaged, guess what they put on!
