My '65 Monza build and mods

Post by Bughappy »

Been a Corvair owner for nearly 2 months now and a member here on "corvair forum" nearly as long. Thanks to you all I have already learned more about my 'vair than I could have in years on my own, thanks everybody!

future plans include corsa dash, console w/GPS, moving shifter to console (powerglide), AM/FM radio with Sirius and Bluetooth, full new interior (started on seats already), minor body work and new paint (retired body and paint guy here), tinted windows, lowering car a couple of inches, new tires (BFG TA's) on existing 14" rims and getting AC (factory AC car) to work again. I'll post picts as work progresses.

Parts acquired so far.. used corsa dash, front buckets (now installed), Clarks carpet kit, headliner, brake lines, front pulley, HD oil pump, steering wheel adapter and new steering wheel (now installed), new turn signal assy.

Now that new buckets are in I can begin building the console.. that's my next goal.

Some picts of my car as it is today and with the bench seat it had when I bought it

Got a console from Amazon today that I plan to modify (add to) to build the console I want. this one takes care of the cup holders (front and rear) padded arm rest and storage. By adding to the front I'll have room for the Powerglide shifter (going with a corsa dsh), speakers, clock and a GPS screen along the lines of others I have seen here.

I talked to a couple of upholstery shops yesterday to get estimates on installation of the Clarks headliner I have coming, and about the door and 1/4 panels. the ones I have were poorly done (NOT original) and don't fit well. (Think I will order them from Clarks too after talking to the upholstery guy). Also today I got a roll of foil backed sound deadener to apply before I install the new cut pile carpet that will come with the headliner. Lots to do for now.. I'll post more picts as I go along and I will WELCOME any comments and suggestions as interior work is far from my expertise..

Good idea to work with a professional upholstery shop. For the interior side panels, are you going to go stock or custom?

Well sound deadener (from Amazon) and carpet and headliner (from Clarks) has arrived.. thought I would start on installing carpet today .. First I thought to post some shots of what a Nevada car looks like underneath after 50 years rust-wise.... and to my surprise I found THIS! :banghead: Still, all in all pretty nice over all I think.... lots of bushings, grommets, hoses (rubber stuff in general) to replace but I expected that.
View from below shows the White paint job was poorly done and I'll tackle that after "she' is running to my satisfaction (including getting factory air to work again) and interior is done....

one small step forward, with '65 only billet adaptor from Seth Emerson, new turn signal switch and used Grant 13 1/2" wheel from E-bay... AND custom (1921 silver dollar) horn button I have a wheel and column I am happy with.. (The silver dollar horn button just seemed right for a car from the "Silver State", Nevada.. lol)

Now to patch that hole in the floor and get on with the carpet..

coming together ever so slowly... new seats are done, new carpet in (working on trim still), headliner from Clarks fits like a glove (working on that trim too), next job fix windows (install electric window mechanisms) finish center console and build rear speaker box ... so much to do for a basically lazy guy like me.. haha ... but havin' FUN..

Looks great and nice progress! How are you fastening the console to the floor?
Cheers!

Relatives from out of town is my excuse for slow reply.. lol. when finished simple "L' brackets as I plan to carpet most of the console (except the top). I'm working on extending the one I bought all the way forward and adding speakers on the sides, GPS and satellite radio control along with a couple of gauges ... using thin plywood with fiberglass overlay for construction.. picts when I have enough progress to show
