Your description symptoms is that of a hydraulic lifter that has collapsed. Sometimes, when an engine is shut down, a valve will held open by the camshaft position. The valve spring pressure on the lifter, over a period of time, will actually collapse the lifter. When the engine is restarted, the noise.

Most times, the noise will slowly go away while driving. Try a short trip around the block, getting the engine to warm up. Should the noise continue after driving a few miles,
a valve adjustment might be needed.

The idea of cleaning the inside of the engine always is a good idea, but that what detergent oil will do, and using the diesel seems unneeded unless there is more to the story.

The type and viscosity of the oil may be an issue

If you live in an area where the weather temperature has dramatic changes, a multigrade could be needed. In the Hemet area, near Palm Sprigs, hot days are common.

I choose to run a detergent, single weight oil, usually 40 wt.

If the engine is a fresh rebuild, a non detergent oil is my choice for the first few hundred miles. The detergent causes dirt to stay in circulation, so the oil filter can remove the dirt, but a fresh engine will have lots of fine shavings as the rings begin to wear in. I don't want the filings floating around. Using a magnetic drain plug helps with that.

After a few hundred miles, a good oil change and then detergent oil seems to make sense.
