SOS FROM ITALY: GRINDING THE CRANK SHAFT

Post by alexbert »

Hope this is the right section to place this question:

I'm going to visit a machinist with my crankshaft and see what we can do to repair it.
As per pics I posted, the rod crank is hardly damaged (smashed down) in the lubrication hole area, and all over around the bearing surface as well.
According to the person I spoke on the phone with - if the crankshaft has no cracks in the damaged area - instead of welding some material on it and re-machine, it is better to machine the deformated material, creating like a small vane or tub around the oil hole.
Is this something you know or would advice???
Of course this is OK only if also the overall regrinding of the rod bearing is possibile.

So I need to have the maximum grinding possibility on the crankshaft.
According to what I found, these are the dimensions of the bearings (110 HP engine - 1964 - YN code):

INCH min max tol.
Mains 2,20983 2,20993 0,00010
Rods 1,799 1,8 0,00100

The rod bearings available are .010, .020, .030 .
So I can grind max .030 on the rod crank? (which means .762 mm).
Nothing more?

Thank you for kind support.

OK, you almost list the STD sizes for both journals:

2.0983 to 2.0993 for the main (I think you mis-typed them) and 1.799 to 1.800 for the rods as you say.

Yes, that means you would be able to go to:

Main with .030 undersize = 2.0683 to 2.0693

Rod with .030 undersize = 1.769 to 1.770

Will let you work out the millimeters.

Hope it is enough to save your crank. No comment on extra machining around the oil hole without seeing it...sounds kinda bad though. Can you post a picture?

This is the journal in question:

Looks pretty bammered to me, but I've seen some pretty nasty cranks get repaired if the machinist has enough skill. Since the crankshaft is not the only thing damaged, why not source a complete used long or short block and have that shipped to Turin? The cost may be much more than you'd like to pay, but in the end you have better parts to build the engine with.

At the end I will recover the engine block: lifters now move smoothly after having carefully used 1000 sand paper to remove a very small dent inside two lifter seats. so I will revive my TO0505YN. This my engine.

The actual list of required parts will be:
- 1 crankshaft (if the machinist says: no, no...) used and possibly already ground (.020 ?)
- 1 cylinder, used, to be honed
- 1 con rod with piston pin, used
- 2 pistons, used
- 1 set of piston rings (steel is ok?), new
- 1 engine gasket set, new
- 1 bearings set (mains and rods), new: clark's are cheaper... are they OK?

Well, hope this is enough.
I have now to see on internet what I find.

If you can help, I will appreciate.
Thanks

Wow, that crank does look nasty. Let us know what the machinist says.
