'63 Spyder almost ready for paint

Post by Outlaw »

Couple more days and she goes into the booth......already painted the backsides of the trunk and hood. Custom mixed a solid blue that i think will look good. Plan on painting the wheels the same with poverty caps or babymoons. I cut the front bumper down cause of some damage in the center and fabbed bumperettes and painted both (or all three now!) bumpers satin black as well as the side trim. More pics to come.....

Heres a couple pics of the "new" split bumper. i Just cut it off where i thought would look good and tig welded caps to close it up. The rear bumper was in decent shape, but i find it really hard to put less than perfect chrome on a new paint job. Some bodywork was required after as the bumper hides some defects in the front end sheetmetal, which is now very visible. Yeah, i know the purists will have a problem with this but it is a reversible mod. I bought the car as an unfinished project where most of the interior and mechanical were done, for the most part. Not quite to my standards but not a bad job. The car underside was painted with chassis paint but i would have used epoxy primer and a good polyurethane paint like Imron or Endura.

Happiness is fresh paint! Still shooting for a total budget of under $4000 all in and I think i can achieve that. Instead of expensive wheels, I painted the rims as well and added some Babymoons thanks to Hubcap Mike. Colorsand, polish and assembly and I'm done......

I love this project. I can wait to see the finished split bumpers on it. I'm contemplating going black with my chrome pieces on my maroon 64.

When time allows, i may do a "how to" section on how to properly prep and paint trim pieces with some photos, which products are best, a few tricks to make the paint stick well, etc. I've done a few cars with my methods and have no peeling paint yet....knock on wood. I highly recommend SEM Hot Rod satin black......nice stuff and it goes on sooooooo smooth! I used Dupont Imron on my Spyder, but prefer the SEM.

'63 Spyder almost ready for paint "Update"

Post by Outlaw »

Well, had to fly east for a family matter and haven't finished the car, but getting close. Heres a few more shots with the bumpers and some trim on. Now that its coming together, the satin black trim is growing on me but I especially love the black rocker moldings. Again, i can't bring myself to putting less than perfect chrome or brightwork back on a car after painting, and wasn't about to spend ton of money on new stuff. I think I'll paint the headlight trim as well since it's beat up a little as well, with a little bondo and paint, at least it'll look perfect.

I named the color "Superman Blue". I was the Picture Car Wrangler on the TV series "Smallville" (notice the Metropolis licence plate on the front?) and almost everything on the show had to be red, yellow and especially blue, including the cars. They used a similar shade of blue a lot on the show and i always liked it, so i custom mixed up my own.
