Judson Supercharger

Post by Phayes85 »

I know this isn't a Corvair project but couldn't find the right place to post it so it here.

Purchased this Judson Supercharger off of Craigslist not knowing exactly what I was going to put it on, since I didn't have a Corvair at the time. I ended up buying a Lakewood and the Supercharger will not fit unless I make serious modifications to the interior trunk. So I decided to restore it as a side project.

Before endeavoring on this project I was able to find a copy of an original Judson Supercharger manual for a MG, but most of it was still relevant, and a search of the web led me to Judson Guru George Folchi from back East. Folchi was a great help since he did provide me with parts and some instruction.

First I removed the Holley carburetor from the Supercharger. Which only took the removal of several bolts and washers.

I then removed the main nut on the end of the supercharger holding the pulley on the rotor. Once that is removed there is a Woodruff key and the rotor stem that is pulled out.

Once I removed the six bolts on the cap ends, I placed two bolts from Home Depot in the designated holes in the cap end and began evenly screwing them in. This pulled the rotor from one cap end. I then used a press to remove the opposite cap from the other rotor end.

Thus exposing the rotor and the vanes. The original vanes were in okay condition but did show signs of wear. There was chipping on some of the ends and buildup inside of the vane slots in the rotor.

Once I removed the vanes I was able to examine the rotor. The rotor was in great condition with no signs of wear or chipping. The vane slot were also in excellent condition with no signs of warping. I removed all the buildup on the rotor using acetone, as I did not want to expose any part of the supercharger to water.

I then removed the the supercharger casing from the aluminum base by unscrewing the bolts and washers from the bottom of the base.

I then examined the supercharger case and saw wear from the vanes. I ran my finger down the center of the case and felt bumps from where the vanes rubbed. I took the case to be honed and glass bead blasted.

After

I then removed the bearing from the end caps after purchasing the right tools to do so.

I then removed the gasket from the supercharger base and sent all the parts of for glass bead blasting.
IMG_0664.JPG
The difference may not be obvious in the pictures but the glass bead blasting made everything shine like new.

I then repainted the supercharger case and painted parts with high temperature engine paint.

I purchased new composite vanes, bearings, and gasket.

I then reassembled the supercharger and placed it on eBay since I have no use for it and would love to see it on someone's Corvair.

It also comes with a Universal Oiler.

Here is the eBay link if anyone is interested...

Please note this is a simplified summary of what I actually had to do, but this covers the basics. If you have any questions just please let me know.

And as for my Lakewood I have installed KYB shocks in the front and rear, thats it. Slowly collecting parts for a restoration.

Thanks for looking.

Phayes85...I cannot think of a better reason for you to buy a late model (because L/M's rule) Corvair than to install this supercharger on it. You do great work and you should be driving this supercharger yourself. Plenty of room in a L/M engine compartment for that Judson.

As the great debate continues (EM vs LM). I am a EM guy, just like the look.
