New Member and new Corvair Owner

Post by Imnvegas »

Got my first corvair about a month ago and I love it. It was in this shape when I bought it. It and my Harley are my daily driver. This site has been a great source of information. Its in pretty good shape, Engine has been rebuilt and drives great. Always been a desert (west coast) car and is rust free. Needs just a bit of TLC here and there. The only thing I don't like is the gas mileage. LOL My Fatboy gets better mileage.

Clean -- No Rust -- Runs Well! Sounds like you've got it made! ::-):

What kind of gas mileage are you getting?

Welcome to the Corvair Forum! I joined this forum in August after buying my tenth Corvair in June -- a 1966 Corsa convertible. I had sold my last Corvair in the early 1990s, so my family had been without a Corvair in the family for about twenty years. If you are interested in reading a little about my Corvair background see New from Lake Chatuge, North Carolina in this same section of the Corvair Forum. It describes my first experience with our first family Corvair in 1961, up through our current 1966 Corsa that we purchased in 2012. Half of our Corvairs were Early Models (1961-1963) an the remainder were 1965-1966 Corsas.

It looks like your Corvair is a 1964 Monza convertible. The link to the early model (1961) shop manual should prove useful. This manual is the basis for all 1961-1964 maintenance and repair procedures. There were some minor differences in the 1964 rear suspension, carburetors, cooling fan and belt, etc., and the 1964 engine displacement increased from 145 ci to 164 ci, but the downloadable 1961 manual should cover most procedures adequately. Hopefully the CORSA chapter locator will help with locating other Corvair enthusiasts in your area, if you would like to contact other local Corvair owners. The other links will provide you with some technical information that I have found to be useful, and some Corvair parts sources. Please let us know of your other needs and interests, and I'm sure you will find some good support here at the Forum.

Of course, we would love to see more pictures of your Corvair, if you are so inclined.

Welcome Rob! Nice car.....seems like I've seen it somewhere before. Maybe I saw it for sale. Anyway, I'd say if you can squeeze 25 MPG out of a 'vair you'd be lucky. Maybe on a long trip you could top that, I dunno. Well at least you'll get a lot of looks in a classic car and the gas mileage won't kill you like an old muscle car would.

Guess you'll have to rely on the Hog to get your acceleration fix though. ::-):

Well the mileage is about 16-18 city I think. As I tell everyone.... I have 95HP of thundering fury......well the 95 HP is true....The thundering fury part is just in my dreams.... My Fatboy gets about 35mpg and I have about the same HP. I did just purchase the petronix electronic ignition II and coil though. I was told it would be a good thing. Haven't installed it yet.

If I can get 25mpg I will be happy
