New member, just picked up my 2nd corvair.

Post by 916pat »

New member from the Sacramento area here. Been around corvairs most of my life as my dad and grandfather were corvair fanatics. I ended up with my grandfathers 64 Monza coupe about 15 years ago and it has mostly been sitting in the garage waiting its turn. That car sat unused for a good 20 years back in Arkansas. Put brakes, tires and a tune up on it and drove it back home to California. Car ran great and made it with no major problems. The second car I recently picked up was gonna be used for parts but once I got the car home I realized it was in pretty good shape. It's a 64 Monza 4 door with 110 and pg. previous owner had lots of work done to it before the fuel pump went bad and it sat for a year or so. Installed new f pump and it basically fired right up. Anyway, looking to upgrade ignition on both witch is why I find myself here. Lots of knowledgable corvair guys and hoping to find some corvair people in my area.

Welcome to the Corvair Forum! I joined this forum in August after buying my tenth Corvair in June -- a 1966 Corsa convertible. I had sold my last Corvair in the early 1990s, so my family had been without a Corvair in the family for about twenty years. If you are interested in reading a little about my Corvair background see New from Lake Chatuge, North Carolina in this same section of the Corvair Forum. It describes my first experience with our first family Corvair in 1961, up through our current 1966 Corsa that we purchased in 2012. Half of our Corvairs were Early Models (1961-1963) an the remainder were 1965-1966 Corsas.

Of course, we would love to see some pictures of your Corvairs. I've tried to guess about some of your information needs, including your stated interest in finding and meeting other Corvair enthusiasts in the Sacramento area. Hopefully the CORSA chapter locator will help with that effort. The other links will provide you with some technical information that I have found to be useful, and some Corvair parts sources. Please let us know of your other needs and interests, and I'm sure you will find some good support here at the Forum.

You mentioned some interest in upgrading your Corvair's ignition system. The most common upgrade is to install a breakerless electronic ignition system that eliminates the ignition points and condenser, These systems have been around for a lot of years and work pretty well. I wanted to make you aware of some new upgrades that completely eliminate the standard mechanical fuel pump and carburetors on the Corvair and replace them with a computer-controlled Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) system that utilizes GM components. It also uses a computer-controlled multiple ignition coil system that has no moving parts an eliminates the distributor and standard ignition coil completely. The ignition subsystem is available separately, without the EFI, if you only want to upgrade the ignition system.

Although it is not an inexpensive modification, you might find it technically intriguing.

I have studied center-mounted 4-barrel an 2-barrel conversions and several distributor modifications and breakerless ignition systems. In 1969 I built a Corvair engine using a center-mounted Holley four-barrel carburetor. And in 1984 I installed an electronic breakerless ignition system on one of my Corsas. Both modifications worked reasonably well, but both utilize 30-40 year old engineering technology. This new EFI system makes use of modern 21st century General-Motors fuel injection components that are fully supported by GM and are well-designed. Basically the computer programming and sensors have been reconfigured to work with the Corvair. The sensors and computer allow the system to constantly monitor the needs of the engine and the ignition system and fuel system are continuously adjusted by the computer to optimize the fuel and ignition systems for all engine operating conditions -- far better than carburetors and a electro-mechanical distributor could ever do. I intend to install this system on my Corsa and use it for a planned cross-country trip to the west coast and back next summer. My intent here is to make Corvair owners aware of this option before they spend the money on rebuilt carburetors, four-barrel conversions, or electronic breakerless distributor modifications. I feel it is better to consider all available options before making a choice for your car(s).

Here are some links for good Corvair Fuel Injection System Overview videos:

Even if you find this new technology a bit too much, and beyond your needs, as a Corvair enthusiast I thought at the very least you would find it interesting to see some new approaches toward improving our favorite classic cars.
