HP rating of rear suspension/bearings/etc.

Post by Metalman »

Hi, as I posted in my intro I'm planning to do a V8 swap on my corvair. I've got the trans thing worked out, but I'm concerned about the stock corvair drive axles, bearings, control arms, etc.

My plan is to adapt "american" flange-type u joint couplers to the porsche output flanges with crossover U joints.

My question is how much HP/torque will stock driveshafts hold up to? I imagine I could get HD driveshafts made since the length will need to be changed anyhow. I know bearings are usually are inert in compared to HP/torque, but anyone have problems with them in this situation? I've seen one LS/Porsche swap and they made some adapters to put CV type bearings or something to replace the stock setup.

Another idea I've played with is using GM front hub bearings with it's CV stub, Porsche CV's on the trans end, and custom axle shafts. This would be pretty easy to bolt in and retain the gm bolt pattern and give me floating axles. I don't know how big of a concern stock driveshafts are on the corviar vs. movement, but I can see the issue.
thanks in advance, and if there's another thread on this, please post the link. I tried seaching with no luck.

They can handle a lot more power than a Corvair powerplant will ever put out, I think you're gonna be fine.

He is doing a V-8 Conversion =P

MANY V-8 Corvairs have been built and as far as I know those items were kept stock... but I'm no expert. Google "Crown Corvair" and "Kelmark Corvair"... those are the two most common V-8 conversions and they are both mid-engine setups. Also google Corv-8 as that is what these cars are commonly called.

I've seen Crown converted cars with a LOT of horsepower.
