HELP NEEDED! SPRINGS, SPRINGS, SPRINGS

Post by DLVRNIT »

So we are in the process of getting our 60' vair back on the road! One thing we would like to do is level the front or just beyond level it! We have some white wall radials coming that are 185 / 80 - 13's so they match the original 650 - 13's in overall diameter! Although the springs are 50 plus years old they should be alright to use as visually we se no sagging issues? So while at it besides doing the standard KYB shock upgrade and possibly a front disc conversion is there anything "ANYONE" would consider doing different or doing that we may have not considered? Is there an aftermarket spring kit that doesn't sit to low? Should we go with a HD spring only for this conversion? I know some have said our 60' should be left alone but with the mods my Dad did to the interior I just think updating the stance a little and maybe a front disc upgrade should not take away from the originality to much? I'm open to "ALL" opinions and thoughts ::-):!

It's your car - don't worry about what other people tell you . It's just a car .

If the springs are fine I wouldn't change them yet . If you want to raise one end a little you may want to consider aftermarket rubber spring spacers. They work fine . If you want to lower one end there are reversible metal spring spacers that can be used to clamp the spring down.

I'd get it on the road first and see how it drives before changing any springs .

Thanks for the reply! Your attachment sure is in the weeds! Using the forums search function I noticed a couple of members mentioning the use of the HD springs from Clarks (appears the HD springs from them do not lower em vairs)? I would really hope to do say 1/2" rear / 1 1/4" front! I have read also on here that there is a place called coil spring specialties that may do custom coils? There has to be a member or two with an early model vair running a simular set up that could give a newbie a little imput .....

i was able to level out the front end of my 60 by cutting off exactly one coil. then cut the second one to give it a bit of a rake...
i could not tell the difference as far as ride quality, since my pitman arm bushing at the time was no good, and the car just wandered around on the highway anyway
