We're can I find a whole brand new gas heater for a 60 model?

Post by Corvair_man »

I recently looked at the gas heater and see i can't salvage it. I need to buy a whole new one. Parts are missing and I think the blower motor is seized because when I turn it it moves slow. I'm going to Assume the original owner took it apart because I have no screws or bolts to put it back together. What is this rubber thing? It's hard and dry

Finding a brand new one would probably impossible and terribly expensive if so.

The grommet looks like one for the wiring going into the trunk of a late model. It could also be used on the earlies also.

Regarding the ebay unit above...I don't see the exhaust outlet elbow pipe coming out of the unit. If it's not there (broken off) that unit is NOT viable.

Also, the ebay unit is very rusty, I would hold out for one that's not rusty (most are NOT rusty) and any gas heater you but MUST have a perfect and solid exhaust elbow.

Yeah that part isn't in the trunk. I might delete the whole gas heater until I git a new one. At least the car won't be used in the winter time since it will be a car show car

I was looking forward to using the gas heater in my '60 but it's never run right. For a while it would run great but only once in a while.
I've got several gas heaters but can never find the time to mess with them.
They're more complicated and difficult to work on than one might think.

I have a NOS one in the original box. The box has been opened, and I loaned the gaskets to Cal Clark so he could make accurate reproductions and then put the originals back into the box. I only know that the exhaust pipe is missing, but reproductions are available. The one thing that most people forget to take when they remove a used one is the steel tube at the top of the fuel tank through which the excess fuel is returned to the tank. I am open to offers, but as "irfgt" said, it will be expensive, along with the shipping, since it is heavy.

The Corvair Ranch web page indicates that they offer "Rebuilt" Gas Heaters for Early Model cars as well as F.C. vehicles. The rebuilt Car version shows a price of $1,390.00 plus a $300.00 core charge. Shipping from the East Coast to the West Coast could get expensive. I saw nothing useful on the California Corvair website.

The Corvair Ranch also has a "Gas Heater Kit" that replaces all rubber with Viton, An electric fuel pump is used to eliminate typical issues and allows the heater to be used without the engine being on. The electrolytic capacitor that is used as a condenser is replaced by a mica capacitor. The original full 12v hi output coil is replaced with a new one of equal quality. The original solenoid is replaced with a new higher quality one that fits perfectly where the old one went. And really all parts are new or like new. Best of all, no changes show. (No pricing mentioned for this)

My GUESS as to the Value of a truly N.O.S. unit would be somewhere between $2,500.00 & $4,000.00 :my02:

Just so you're clear on this, the exhaust elbow that comes out of the heater's heat exchanger is NOT something you would find in the trunk. The exhaust pipe might be in the trunk but the elbow is part of the heat exchanger inside the main heater unit. If the elbow is missing, that means it has rusted off the stainless steel heat exchanger. Replacement heat exchangers are rare and expensive - $350-$400 I would imagine. A missing or loose elbow renders the gas heater unit "junk" except for small parts.

Is it worth replacing the whole unit and not the heater? I know I need to replace the intake hose but idk if I need to replace the intake motor, I have to remove it and look at it. I have no way of testing through the cars interior because the fuse block is shot the only fuse slot that is surprisingly in good shape is the ignition fuse. I'm also trying my best to keep the car original as possible. I mainly just want a heater and not a bunch of other parts. I just know the basics of the heater and how it works

Craig replies: If your wiring and insulation is OK, you can just replace the fuse box. I know a guy (me) who designed and manufactures replacement Corvair fuse panels. These panels use modern ATO "Plastic" blade fuses. Ive sold maybe 400 kits.

I'm not sure what fuse on your panel is still good but it's not "Ignition". 60-66 Corvairs did not fuse the ignition circuit. Instead, that circuit along with the gauges, is powered directly and unfused from the key switch.

Here's a photo of the panel installed in my '60.

No one asked me but a heater would be way down on my list of things to do after getting the car running and driving well.
In the engine compartment there's a Tee coming out of the fuel pump that feeds the carburetors and the 4th side has a tube nut flare fitting that goes to the gas heater and returns to the gas tank. I would remove that tube nut and install a 3/16 flare plug.

I just want to figure out were I can git one when I'm ready to git it or i git the part and wait to install it back in the car after body repair and paint
