LM 4D Door Edge Guards - Who Here Has Them Installed?

Post by Rotary FP46 »

These seem to be a commonly-available item through places like Ebay and Clark's. I haven't seen a late 4-door equipped with them. Wondering whether any of you have such a beast. Seems like they might complement the optional gas door trim.

Here is my 66 with them. I am not fond of the white stripe, though.

I am not a fan of the gas door trim. It looks garish.

I haven't seen a car equipped with one where I thought it added anything to the picture. Still, every nut having a squirrel, etc. - maybe the door edge guards are the spoonful of sugar that would make that particular medicine go down and stay there. An idea and nothing more.

I have questions for you about the trim along the bottom edge of your 4-door. It's a whole other topic I have to get into with someone because of the trim I've found in the rafters here.

I attended the Lehigh Valley Corvair Club's Corvair Swap Meet this past Saturday April 19th.

While browsing through some of the $1.00, $2.00, and $3.00 tables offered, I saw what were described as "Door Edge Guard Clips".

Over the years, I have had a set or two of these but don't recall ever seeing any clips or installation instructions for them and suspected if anything that they would simple be held on by friction.

Having never installed a set of Door Edge Guards, I never considered that they might need some sort of clip to fasten them properly to the door.

There is also a chance that the items I saw could have been for a different application or even misidentified.

It seems that some did and some didn't. I remember working on a car that didn't have door edge guards but when you open the door there was a clip on the inside of the door. Not sure where the outside part of the clip was or how the inside part didn't fall off.

No clips on the GM ones I encountered.

Word of warning. They are tight to put on. A couple of coats of paint will make them impossible to install. Make sure you get GM ones. Aftermarket ones may not fit perfectly.

Did the 2 door edge guards use clips? The ones I got from a CCF member did not have them. Futile attempts to install them.

There's been a glut of that LM 4-dr trim on the market for years. Cathy's 65 Monza came to us with the door edge trim installed long ago. I don't mind the look of it but I certainly would not risk paint damage to see how it would look without it.

A great comment!!!! Today's urethane paints are thicker than the old factory synthetic lacquer paint!!

I got to look at my More Door's door edge trim to see how they were held on. There are no clips any where along the edge trim I can locate. Inside edge is smooth from top to bottom. No evidence of any clip under the trim. These door edge pieces look like tap on and stay type of trim pieces.

My (former) 65 4-door had an NOS set of door edge guards installed. I was never a fan of them, but they scratched the paint underneath. The door edge guards, plus the 2-tone top trim on the car was too much for me.

Got a set of door edge guards for my EM 2dr. Clarks recommended the clips, but I didn't use them as the car has thicker paint. They went on just fine and hold well.
