oil filter adaptor
oil filter adaptor
i am looking for a oil filter adaptor that uses a spin off filter for my 63 monza, does any one know where i might find one?
Re: oil filter adaptor
No replies???? This topic came up here this year --- do a SEARCH.
Re: oil filter adaptor
i have been searching on line but haven't had any luck, i checked Clarks but all they have is one that takes a Corvair filter with the center bolt, i would like the adaptor for a screw on filter because i am having a hard time getting my filter to stop leaking, i used the wiks and a Clarks filter and they both want to leak
Re: oil filter adaptor
We are working on one. I'll let you know if/when we get a working well flowing one made.

Re: oil filter adaptor
I would say if you're having trouble getting either of those brands to seal, there is something wrong with your delcotron adapter. Chances are a screw on filter conversion, would leak too.
Re: oil filter adaptor
Is it leaking around the edge, or from around the bolt on the top? Is it a standard, vertical mount? Are you using the original-style hard "plastic"/bakelite gasket.

Re: oil filter adaptor
I'm with Wagon. If you can not get the stock filter to not leak, the adapter gaskets fit to the same surfaces.
In 50 years of Corvairing the only leaks I've seen are:
1. Old filter gasket sticks to oil filter/delcotron adapter. The new filter goes on fine, but those two flat surfaces now spew oil when the pressure gets up. Not leak at idle, but looses quarts on the interstate!
Cure: remove extra gasket
2. Oil pressure relief valve gets stuck and oil pressure goes over 100 psi. The first clue, besides the oil spewing from the gasket area, is the filter starts ballooning
!
Cure: unstick little piston the spring presses against.
3. Oil filter/Delcotron adapter gets a nick/chunk missing from the big gasket surface.
Cure: replace adapter with a good one. Most are common items. Only the 1965 Greenbrier one is very rare, but any alternator mount one will work, just gives an extra place to pour oil in.
The only reason people made that spin on adapter was to use cheap replacement filters instead of the Corvair filter. If one does not drive their vehicle more than 4000 miles a year, that's one oil change per year, it will be years before it pays for itself. I take them off cars I buy that have them installed and run the stock filter, sell the adapter for good money!

Re: oil filter adaptor
I suppose some use cheap spin on oil filters (is there such a thing anymore?). I have the spin on oil filter adapter and the filters I use are not CHEAP spin on filters. Also with A/C, changing the stock filter with the 90 degree adapter is a PITA. Lets not forget the filter problems with the Clark's filters over the years. Re: oil filter adaptor
One common use of the adapter is when you have an electric oil pressure sending unit attached using one of the Clark’s oil filter bolts. the adapter allows filter replacement without disconnecting the wire and keeps that top bolt tight (preventing leak). As to the original question posted...
monzadon- call Corvair Ranch, California Corvairs, Mike’s and search eBay listings. Something might come up.

I find using a typical larger diameter filter is a PITA on AC cars....
Gets in the way of changing the belt.
Also you need to take that assembly off every few years to replace the rubber seal inside. They get hard (remember Buna-n O-rings) and bypass the filter.
Get both the special 90° rubber and cardboard gaskets when you do this.
I found using a long 3/8" extension gets to the filter bolt on a 90° adapter quite easily. And just like the regular mounted filter, a plastic bag catches the oil. Do check for bags without holes...
