Any recent east coast transport experience

Post by Dennis66 »

I did a search and there are too many topics. Has anybody had recent experience shipping a car on the east coast. The countdown is on for my move to South Carolina. I made the mistake of filling out a brief questionaire on the web and suffered way too many texts and phone calls. Reviews of companies are full of horror stories followed by glowing reviews of the same company. I considered trailering, but don't have a big enough truck to rent a trailer. Considered flat towing with a towbar, but a little concerned about that. Suggestions? Company names with a good experience? Florida to S.C.

FYI, Ken (Kmart) gave me a possible contact. I'll check with him.

Rent a U-Haul trailer.
Rent the Menard's truck.
Dump them both in NC.
U-Haul's smallish trucks will pull one of their trailers too.
Haul your garage stuff in the box. Tow the car trailer.

Yes finding a "reputable" transport is a circus. Mostly brokers who hire anybody.

MAKE SURE THE CAR IS INSURED. A buddy watched his old truck go out of control being loaded and it side swiped two NEW cars. Transport company did NOTHING, but my buddies insurance company paid all and sued transporter!!!!!

Considering today's highway traffic, I WOULD NOT TOW A CAR more than a few local miles!!!! Just me.

Also your insurance may not cover the car while being towed!!!! Best to call insurance company to check on transport coverage. Policies are loaded with fine print. Mine says "Insurance coverage null and void during a nuclear attack"

A few years ago when I sold my 2000 Plymouth Prowler, I recommended Reliable Transport for the job since (as I recall) they were the company that delivered those vehicles to the dealerships when the cars were new.
They had a good reputation.

The buyer contacted Reliable, got a quote, got a "Window" for pick up and delivery with no problem and provided payment. UNFORTUNATELY, the Delivery Date came and went without any further word from Reliable.... :nono:

It seems that there was a Big Auction by Mecum or Barrett Jackson taking place around the same time so my guess is that the first time small customer got left high and dry in order to get more business from a bigger customer. :td:

Yes, my buyer got a prompt refund but the car still needed to get to it's new home somehow.
Long story short, my buyer borrowed a truck and trailer then drove from Texas (almost Mexico) to Maryland to pick up the car and did the job himself.

It seems that Reliable is no longer Reliable especially if a Big Auto Auction is taking place at the time.

call Paul at Unique Carriers out of Pasco County 813 713 6366. A few years ago he took a car I sold from Stuart Fl to Buffalo NY, I later called the buyer to ask how it went and he said all good, on time, no problems. Last November I saw a distant car I thought about buying, figured out the time and expense for me to haul the trailer there and back, then called Paul and got a much better quote for him to bring it back on one his runs. As it turned out, I didnt buy that car. If you need more recommendations I will ask the guys at bkfast tomorrow who they use.

Rent the Menard's truck.

He did say Florida! :rolling:

I've used Passport transport for two in the last 7 years. Both times went just fine.

Intercity is recommended by high end people on AACA forum.

Before that I used Peg's trucking. She used to drive then became a broker. But sadly she has retired form this too. She was highly regarded in the Studebaker world. Even arranged hauling for my Graham from Florida to here. :chevy:

Further north is Horseless Carriage in New Jersey. My brother-in-law knows the family that owns it and they have an excellent reputation. I’ve been to their storage facility and is a very clean, well organized place. Have no idea where their prices are compared to their competition but I would be confident the shipped car will be well taken care of.

I've had a really hard time with brokers. Truckers will pick up the job and then drop it when something better comes along (they don't seem to want to drive up into Michigan, probably because it's up and out of the way). When I bought my Riviera back in '22, I hired a retired trucker with an enclosed trailer. It was more expensive than the brokers, but he picked it up when he said he would and dropped it off when he said he would, and he kept in contact the whole time. Nice guy. I've also rented a U-Haul truck and trailer in the past with no issues for shorter hauls.

Here's an AACA thread with his information:

Thanks. I’ll keep that along with the contact that Ken gave me. A guy at church this morning offered the use of his Ram 2500. Tempting offer, but wife is against it right now because of time ( and I don’t even close on the house until the 7th.
Speaking of time. I’m sitting in the ER after I fell off a step ladder. They told me I didn’t break my ankle, but it’s badly sprained 😒
