Re: Lots of smoke the BAM it quits
Bought a scope and checke every piston and saw no parts laying on piston head but they looked oily wet inside. And when it went BAM i even felt it cause me hand was on the engine. Have not tried to turn it over yet, maybe later today or tomorrow. Thanks for ideas. Jim
Re: Lots of smoke the BAM it quits
If the top.of a piston broke off, it will remain in place at the cylinder top and won't be obvious at first glance. Happened to me long ago in college. Used it as the subject of a research paper on fatigue in an engineering class. Got an A. Lemons, lemonade.
You'll learn a lot by turning the crank over by hand.

i scoped the inside cylinder walls and saw no damage. Is that possible?

I know of Sarge well and we have worked together before. He recommended scoping the cylinders and I just did do that and will report to him this coming week. He is very good.

Re: Lots of smoke the BAM it quits
People ask about what happened and I will say this......from the minute I started for the last time it was immediately burning/ blowing blue smoke and running a little off, Within 2 minutes or 1 minute the engine went "Bang/Bam one time and stopped dead. At that point I turned off engine and did not even try to turn it over again and started researching what could have happened. And I also started researching another 140hp engine. So thats where I am at now. Will take sparks plugs out tomorrow and try to hand turn the engine over and watch again with scope what is happening. Any other suggestion is well appreciated. Thanks

When you pull all the plugs, BEFORE you turn it, scope each cylinder and make note of the position of each piston. Now turn it just a bit one direction and make sure all pistons move. Then turn a little bit more in the opposite direction and note if any did not move. It's been mentioned here, and I have seen it before where the top of a piston comes off. They usually fail at the oil ring groove IIRC.

Will be in touch with ColorSarge this week, but should I start looking for another engine? Been thinking that way especially with answers from members of this forum. But still doing things to see if I can at least turn it by hand.
There's a guy near Miami with a 140hp available. Thinking that route too. Anybody know of him?

Also in Christana there is Dave with First State Corvair. PM me and I'll give you his contact info. Very good Corvair mechanic.

This one's in Holiday, a lot closer than Miami, but on the Gulf Coast.

It's been nearly a week. Please end the cliffhanger and turn the crank. Does it go 360 or not?
