Keying the glovebox
Keying the glovebox
My ignition key works on my trunk but not the glovebox. I rarely ever need to lock something away in the glovebox as the trunk takes care of that for me. But I thought it would be nice to have it keyed the same. BTW, I dont have a key for the glovebox so Im happy its not locked!
I called the local locksmith that has been around since the 60s in this area. Well known company to say the least. They said 4 to 5 days and 80 bucks to do it if I bring them the ignition key and the glovebox lock.
Ouch!
What is going on here? Is this a big deal? Something that I dont understand?
I think in the past Ive read about one of you fine members having key cutters and or knowing about these things. Please let me know if maybe you have the ability to do this for me and if it would save me a few bucks.
Not looking to do this right now as I said, its not important.
Any comments please let me hear them.
Thanks.

Several of us have key cutters but that isn't what you need. You'll have to rearrange/replace the wafers in the cylinder to match the ignition key. I've never done that to a glovebox lock so hopefully someone will speak up that knows.

Thanks for your comment Joel. Someone told me Frank does this stuff too so maybe he will pop in with a comment.
It looks like you would have to remover the chrome metal front on the lock to get to the pins. Im not going to open it up but thats what I see.

NO!

Rookie locksmith move. And I've seen professional locksmiths do it, ruining the bezel.

I've posted how to open GM glove box locks somewhere. I'll PM it to you.

Re: Keying the glovebox
By accident, I have all 5 locks (ignition, doors, glove box & trunk) in my MoreDoorall operate off one key. As therewasno trunk lok in the car when I got it, I took the glove box and trunk locks out of my Coupe to put in the car. This then caused caused the ordering of a set of locks for my Coupe.
When I visited the locksmith to get new keys made for the More Door, I learned that one key fit all locks. Didn't matter trunk or door key, they all opened every lock. The key even fit the engine lid lock. But the lid lock key would not fit the car locks.
Unfortunately the coupe needs the 2 keys, as I did not get lucky in the key code roulette.
I keep a More Door key on my truck key ring in case it is ever needed while on a trip.
So if your order a set of doors and ignition locks with a specific code and then order a glove box and trunk lock with the same code, you should have the same result.

Thanks for the comment Al.
Frank I will get with you and see.
I can see how someone would think the basal would need to come off, as that is what I was seeing. But I didn't try as I figured if I did take it apart I wouldn't have the new pins/tumblers to put in so why bother.

Re: Keying the glovebox
Years ago when I first acquired my Kelmark car (Late model coupe, the first time), I wanted everything on One Key.
I didn't want to mess with the glovebox lock so I changed the ignition and doors to match the glovebox and trunk.
Taking the early glovebox lock plug out of the housing can be tricky but I find getting it back together to be even trickier. Recently I had occasion to disassemble one and it had been decades since I had done it.
It was not like riding a bicycle and I had to learn the process all over again. It wasn't difficult, but rather frustrating for me, so now I would prefer never to do it again....

Re: Keying the glovebox
I did manage to get the tumbler part out of the lock housing. Im thinking i could file down the ones that stand too high when the key is inserted and that would work.
But Im going to wait and see what Frank has to say. Dont want to screw things up then have to buy another and start over.
Im in no hurry on this so I can wait. I have to admit that without Franks explanation about how to get it apart in a PM Id have never figured it out or would have messed it up beyond repair.

Re: Keying the glovebox
At one time Clarks sold C5749, an un-keyed lock cylinder for 60-64 glovebox locks. The procedure to key it was insert your key in the lock and grind off the tabs that stuck up. It worked fine for me back in 1978, but I don't really remember all the details. Clarks no longer has it in stock, but I have seen other selling them online. Your thought on filing the current lock might be good enough.

Re: Keying the glovebox
With the help from Frank Ive got the job done myself. Saved me a lot of time and some money. Thanks Frank!
The hardest part was as Caraholic mentioned, getting the tumbler out of the lock. For me it was a mix of having the key in and having the key out and with the lock being in the unlocked position. Picking the first pin to get the tumbler out.
After it was out it was just as I thought and as JayPaul mensioned. Filing the pins with the key in the tumbler.
Only took a couple minutes and i was putting it back together.
Thanks again for the help Frank.
