65 Monza powerglide leak after long drive

Post by kolson181 »

Looking for help. 65 Monza PG leaks a little transmission fluid after long drive ( 20+ miles). I can putt around town for a couple hours staying under 50mph- no issues but if I get out on the highway and run 60+ mph for any amount of time then the next day I have a small puddle of tranny fluid on the floor. Climbed under the car and looks to be coming from the vent on the back side. Vent seems to be loose so don’t think it plugged obviously cause that’s where it’s leaking from. Could a torque converter cause a leak from the vent? The car shift into all gears just fine and never slips unless it has set for more than a week or so but fine after a few minutes. Motor and transmission were rebuilt over last winter and this summer was the first time ever driving a Corvair so I assume the tranny is functioning properly. Anyone have some thoughts what would cause a leak from the vent? TIA!

Overfilled or overheating can blow fluid out the vent. Hopefully someone will chime in with dipstick length.

When filling once you start seeing it on the dipstick it seems like it doesn't take much to get to Add and not much to get to Full. I've had a few that get to over-Full way too easy.
The level does grow on the dipstick when it gets warmed up. Hot with the engine running is the thing and it's really hard to see clean fluid on the dipstick.
"They" say too high on the ATF is harder on the PG than too low. In your situation I might see if it vents itself down to a happy level where it still operates in all the ways it should. I'm happy to have someone say that's bad advice and come up with a better explanation and solution.

I had a similar issue with my 65 - the Sprag in the Torque Converter went bad and the converter needed replacement.

Just thinking out loud - it would seem to me if the fluid was foamed from a level that is too high once it quit leaking the level would be too low. All the fluid would be formed and once it settled you wouldn't have enough.
The sprag issue caused overheating didn't it?
