VENMO - Anyone using, problems to report?

Post by scottymac »

In May, my Paypal account was hacked. I've tried to sever all contacts with them, and am looking for a substitute. Can anyone recommend VENMO, or they all just a roll of the dice?

What I like about Paypal is the buyers protection. Not sure if Venmo offers that. My wife does Venmo and Zelle. I prefer Paypal. Dennis

I use Venmo sometimes but I don't really like it much. It's a mash-up between social media and payment. Most transactions are public like a facebook or forum thread. When I pay someone, it shows a string of payment descriptions and comments detailing the recipient's purchase and payment history. There are boxes to check to make payments private but you have to remember to check them. I have no idea what others see when they're paying or receiving from me.

Venmo also pushes their app, which I'm reluctant to download to my phone. I go their website using my computer but that requires a bit of paddling upstream to avoid their prompts to download their app. I'm very happy with PayPal and have used that service for a long time without issue. (knock on wood).

Never used Venmo, but I did have issues with Paypal that weren't addressed to my satisfaction. I dropped them like a hot potato. Went back to using a bank card (which I rarely ever use). Cash is still king.

The only method I have ever used other than my Credit Cards or Checks had been Pay Pal until they had some internal glitch that then prompted them to want me to re-verify who I am.

The only method Pay Pal would accept involved Text Messaging which I did not have at the time and refuse to utilize now even though the providers have a tendency to force that feature down our throats anymore.

I tried everything I could to find alternative methods to re-verify myself to their satisfaction but cooperation from them did not exist and I closed the account. Since then they have tried multiple times to re-establish my account but they had their chance.

To this day, I still use a flip phone and absolutely detest the "Smart Phone" I have issued to me for work. I see nothing "Smart" about them, just difficult to do the simplest things sometimes. Apps, games, and texting do not run my life. ::-):

I believe Venmo is owned by PayPal.

I use Venmo, PayPal, & Zelle and haven't had issues with any of them. However the bank account I attach to these is not a primary account. So if they are ever hacked, I'm only out a few hundred dollars.

I use Venmo. The only way it is public is if you friend people then you can see their transactions and vise versa. I've had no issues so far.

I'm old school and pretty much refuse to use any of them. I used Paypal in the past, but too many people I know had issues, one guy I know lost almost $1,000 selling Stanley Cup Final tickets to someone who had used a hacked account. He never recovered those $$. I killed off my account after that incident. Sure, it may limit where I can buy, but everyone has to weigh their risk tolerance. I do so little buying/selling outside of places like Clark's, Amazon, other legit websites, etc it doesn't really impact me at all not using these payment services.

Very smart. Unfortunately you have to do this now. I've gotten SIX notifications my "PERSONAL DATA" was stolen from different sites in the last decade!!!!!!! The worst was a government site. I had to freeze my credit information at all the national credit brokers to stop bogus loans and credit/debit cards. For a few years my credit card companies were re-issuing my card about every four months due to "unauthorized use". You should set up all financial accounts with double authentication.

NOTE: ONLY CREDIT cards are limited on losses you might have to pay due to theft by Federal regulations. Debit cards are NOT protected, it is the cards issuer's decision to make you pay or not. I CANCELLED ALL MY DEBIT CARDS!

While a PITA ---- I have not lost a penny.

I use Venmo all the time. My tenants pay rent with it, I give money to my kids with it, never had an issue and it works great. There is no protection if you send money to someone there is no way to get it back , same goes if someone sends you money , they cannot reverse it or charge back. When it’s gone it’s gone.
