64 4 speed clacking noise from clutch/trans?
64 4 speed clacking noise from clutch/trans?
Hello fellow Corvair enthusiasts, I also have a 64 4 speed, 110hp that makes a "clacking" noise that I hear at stop lights with my foot off of the clutch, when I place my foot on the clutch with little to no effort the noise goes away. Pressure plate?, throw out bearing? The noise seams to not be present at first start up, cold. After warming up it is prevelant at stop lights. It seams to go away as rpm's increase, at least thats how it seams. Hard to hear anything at higher rpm's. In the video you can immediately hear the clacking and then I set my foot on the clutch and it goes away. It only takes about a 1/2" of depression to stop the "clacking". Its not clicking like a valve noise, not coming from the engine bay. Any idea's would be heavily appreciated.

Would you consider it a rattling noise? Been a long time since I’ve heard one but loose flywheel seems like a possibility. Makes noise when clutch pedal is untouched, goes away with a little pressure on the clutch pedal.
My understanding is it eventually happens to all original flywheels.

Yep, if it sounds like a rod bearing knock, flywheel. Get a bolted or hot riveted one. Oh, and if it has been a while:
flywheel
pressure plate
clutch disc
throwout bearing
pilot bushing
rear, I mean front main crankshaft seal
gasket for belhousing (in order to change the front main seal)
input shaft seal

Update on the 64 clacking noise. Just after my last post I had an input seal go bad on my 64's differential. While the mechanic had it he, tightened up the transmission and clutch linkage and that seams to have corrected the "clacking" noise. Thank you all for your suggestions and advice!

Does the cable still have free play? If not, it is too tight and that will mask a bad flywheel. Any pressure on the clutch will stop the noise of bad flywheel rivets.

Agree with Joel's. Probably tightened enough to put pressure and stop the clanking. will eventually end up with clutch slipping. Mechanic should have fixed it right. Dennis
