Re: Converting 1 Wire alternator back to a 3 Wire

Post by BingBang »

UPDATE: I pulled the alternator and brought it to the alternator shop. I explained that I wanted the one wire internal regulator removed and replaced with internal regulator that allows the 3 wire connection. I explained that it was my understanding I needed this done to have my fan warning light work.

He tested it and said the warning light should work fine if I plugged in the wires in the top of the stator. So I went home re-installed the stator and just plugged in the wires like Brad B showed in his photo. I cranked it over and the light stayed on. I revved it a bit to see if it had to have a certain rpms to turn off. Nope, light stayed on. I gave up for the day.

The next day I go out and notice that the fan belt came off when I started the engine! I put it back on and tried again. This time the warning light turned off after the engine began running. I have driven a few times and it seems to be working. I wonder if the original shop installed a regulator that worked either way. He told me to run it with the one wire attached and he inserted a rubber plug that covered the other connectors on top.

I am not using the "Special Regulator Adapter" shown at the bottom of Brad (bbodie52) post.

The procedure described below works with most images seen on many Web pages, including your personal Avatar image!

NOTE: There are some small menu differences with different Web browsers. For example, Google Chrome uses "COPY IMAGE ADDRESS", while Microsoft Edge uses "COPY IMAGE LINK" on their popup menu. Both do the same thing, by copying the image IP Address to the PC Clipboard, to use it to be pasted elsewhere.

:goodpost: :woo:
I made a slight correction to your above post. The iP address you used between the "img-/img" markers pointed to the display page, but was not the correct IP address for the image itself. So the image you wanted to display was not being seen. I edited it to utilize the correct image IP address.

IP ad·dress
/ˌīˈpē əˌdres/
noun COMPUTING
a unique string of characters that identifies each computer using the Internet Protocol to communicate over a network.

Web Page IP Address for the page containing the picture: https://ibb.co/92mB14H

The actual Alternator Image IP Address: https://i.ibb.co/P4sJPWG/alternator-3-Wire.jpg

(The second one is the one that works, because it points to the actual image on that Web page).

The link below will take you to a thread that displays combined (end-to-end) wiring schematics for many Corvair model years. For 1962-1964 (generator-based) Corvairs, I also included the schematic diagrams that I modified to show the changes needed for a correct 3-wire (10DN) alternator interface (with an external 10DN-based Corvair voltage regulator) in-place of the original generator setup.
