Starter Sticking on
1964 Monza Conv, Just replaced the starter with a reman from California Corvair Parts, While attempting to get it started It would turn over fine, but would continue to turn over every so often with the ignition off and the key removed, I suspect its a failing ignition switch, But figured id ask to see if any others ran into this problem
Re: Starter Sticking on
Since you replaced the starter I'll guess there was already some issue. What was it? Was the starter nose cone broken?Alexh_2023 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 04, 2023 1:59 pm 1964 Monza Conv, Just replaced the starter with a reman from California Corvair Parts, While attempting to get it started It would turn over fine, but would continue to turn over every so often with the ignition off and the key removed, I suspect its a failing ignition switch, But figured id ask to see if any others ran into this problem
It could be a number of things. First --- did this just start when you installed new starter? If so check the small wires at "R" and "S" terminals. Easy to short them to each other or to main power terminal. I've seen it a few times and usually is intermittent.
Other issue is the starter gear won't disengage from flywheel due to PP or torque converter ring gear being off center or badly worn. Eventually it will cause the starter nose cone to break.
The ignition switch could be an issue, but if it was not doing it before with the old starter then it would be a unusual coincidence.
It just could be a bad rebuild. Not common, but happens.
Just my 2 cents. Others may offer more.

The old starter was completely burned out, and shottily rebuilt using epoxy, as well as a cracked nose cone, According to previous owner, Starter worked until one day it stopped
Re: Starter Sticking on
Sometimes a nose cone will just fail, but most often it is due to an issue between the stater and pressure plate ring gear, or torque converter ring gear.Alexh_2023 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 04, 2023 2:40 pm The old starter was completely burned out, and shottily rebuilt using epoxy, as well as a cracked nose cone, According to previous owner, Starter worked until one day it stopped
Just me, but I'd pull the starter and get help to rotate the engine by hand to inspect the ring gear teeth via the starter hole.
It still would not hurt to inspect the wires at the "S" and "R" terminals.
