Shifter tube

I am starting the reworking of my 66 Corsa stating from the bottom up. The front suspension has been remove, the bushing and ball joint removed and it currently is at the blaster for cleaning and prime. Now I am moving towards the back and got stumped at the tunnel exit. The gas linkage and shifter were not anywhere close to the center of their exit holes? The gas pedal rod was on the wrong side of the swivel ( attached to transmission ) so putting that on the correct side will correct that. The shifter rod is a different story. It is laying on the steel mounting brace from the tunnel seal? Could the tube be bent??? Do I remove and just straighten it?? Thanks for your input.

I did my shifter at the end of December - here are some pictures as I went through the removal and install: viewtopic.php?p=122034#p122034

I think your support rod may have come loose (or been installed like that?) allowing the tube to be too low. Maybe also check engine and trans mounts to make sure they haven't sagged and pulled it down? I suspect when you take it apart you will be able to rotate the support rod and get everything where it needs to be.

Thanks for your reply and the link to your Corsa’s repairs. I will continue to dismantle
the power train and will check out the transmission mounts and shifter rod when they are out of the car.
My65 Monza looks similar in color to your Corsa

The shift tube should be disconnected from the trans crossmember before removing the engine as should the clutch and throttle linkages, fuel line between main body and engine and a number of other things. not disconnecting all these things and then lowering the rear of the powertrain for engine removal without taking these things loose can result in bent parts. Your shift tube may or may not be bent. You say the engine is out of the car? What is holding the transaxle up? I would not pass judgement on the shift tube until I tinstalled it to a properly installed powertrain including good transmission and engine mounts. See how it sits then.

Engine is still in the body. I will start taking it out in the next few weeks. I will inspect transmission and motor mount after power train in on my work table. I know something is worn out or miss aligned due to the shifting tube almost hanging below the tunnel. Thanks for you input

I somehow misread or confused this with a different post. Yeah if it is that low with the powertrain complete something is bent or hanging loose.
