1960 Monza Coupe
Re: 1960 Monza Coupe
The next show was to the The Great Western Fan Belt Toss & Swap meet on October 22-25th.
I’ve been involved with and attending the fan belt toss since my first Corvair in 2010. I’ve never taken my own Corvair to the show. I’ve either not had one running or not had one at all or been too involved in the hosting of the event to take one. I thought this year would be the year.
After I threw the rod on Oct 10th. I called my friend Kregg who had been helping me with the car. I told him I spun a bearing and wasn’t going to drive it this year. He and another friend Darrin offered to help me quickly build another motor. I said no. I also needed to make merchandise to sell at the event since I was a vendor too. They came up with another plan. They removed the running motor from Kregg’s show van. They stripped off all the tins and accessories and brought it over and we put it in my car. I wrenched for days and nights to get it finished. I finished it about 1:30 on Thursday (the day we are to leave for the toss). I had planned on us leaving at 3pm. That didn’t happen. I was still making hoodies to sell. My wife came and stopped me from making stuff and said we should leave. It was 7pm. I have not driven the car at night so the headlights needed adjusting. I of course broke one of the adjusters. Luckily I have 3 more early coupes in the backyard so I got a couple good adjusters from two of the cars. I installed those and while I was at it installed new LED headlight bulbs. We left again at 9pm. About a mile or two into going down the cajon pass I turned on my left turn signal to change lanes. It stuck on. I couldn’t turn it off. This was the last straw (of many more I didn’t mention over the previous weeks). I called my wife who was following me in my truck and said I’m turning back. It’s just not ready yet. She said we haven’t eaten yet let’s go find food and talk about it before we head back home. I agreed.
We stopped at a Del taco. It was closed inside so she took my truck through the drive through while I waited in the Corvair. We had a small dinner and I decided it was not ready yet and we would head home. About 3/4 of a mile before we got home I lost the throttle. I got out hoping it was just a broken spring and I could replace it with one I had in the trunk. It wasn’t. I grabbed a screw driver and turned the throttle up enough so I could limp the car home. We arrived in Palm Springs at 2am without the Corvair.
I did win the “Hard Luck” award at the banquet on Saturday night. Not the award I would have chosen lol.
To sum it up. The Corvair has given me some of the best friends in the world and the event was great even though my car didn’t make it.

Re: 1960 Monza Coupe
I spent all my earnings at the fan belt toss on a custom set of Billet Specialties wheels. I will have to wait until the car has air ride or raise it up to run them full time. Here is a few pictures after I fixed the throttle and pulled it out into the rain.

In a side-by-side comparison, they both look great. It is hard to choose a favorite!

Hard luck indeed! One helluva story. Next year, you're a shoe-in for the "most improved" award!
Re: 1960 Monza Coupe
Fixed the throttle and turn signals and went for a short drive.
Snapped a few pictures while I was out.

Re: 1960 Monza Coupe
Latest update.
I installed LED bulbs and finally got the other taillights wired up.
On the many bugs in this car another showed up...I've got an intermittent electrical issue. The ignition shuts off. It starts back up but its annoying. I'm thinking its the ignition switch since it doesn't need a key and is finicky about where you have it turned in order to get the ignition on.

I think I may have found out why I’m having intermittent ignition shut off.

That'll do it!
Yikes, how hard is it to get a '60 ignition switch? I bet harder than my 67, which I just installed but bought from Pep Boys 20 years ago.

Gee, looks like you've got quite a few other pink connectors down there too. These "butt connectors" as they are known, are seriously frowned upon at my job......soldering/shrink tube is the ticket.
Re: 1960 Monza Coupe
I removed the whole harness.
I had a new one here for a 63 coupe that is quickly becoming a parts car. I’m going to use it in the ‘60.

Re: 1960 Monza Coupe
It’s still tore apart.
I’ve got a few more new things to install as well. I got new carpet from Clark’s and I have a black interior from another car that will go in.
I’ve also changed every bulb in the car to LED. I’m hoping to have it put together by the end of April to attend a car show.

Re: 1960 Monza Coupe
UPDATE:
I was able to drive the car again for the first time last night. It ran great.
I have replaced the low beam headlights with Octane lighting LED headlights. The high beams I had replaced with led earlier. I have replaced EVERY inch of wiring in the car. Every bulb is now LED with the exception of the glove box light (because of the reversed polarity). I also relocated the battery to the trunk. I ran the ground to the motor and to the body near the battery as well. I installed a master kill switch, a master fuse and a fuel pump kill switch that runs off a feed for the tachometer from the distributor. I installed led tube lights in the trunk and engine compartment and a 6 panel control box with relays for the accessory lighting. I installed a usb charging port into where the radio knob normally goes and installed a Spotify car thing. Also painted the dash black and added some red color accents.

Wow, nicely done! Gotta be the coolest '60 anywhere. Sounds like maybe you missed your April car show deadline but won the war!

Re: 1960 Monza Coupe

Those who demand pristine, all original Corvairs and go...

...must be enraged at such blasphemy!

(beautiful car, though!)
I suppose there is room for both types of Corvairs in our world. But I'll bet your version of a 1960 Corvair is more fun to drive!!!
