62 Monza Horn Ring mounting question

Post by VairsRule »

Removed the steering wheel on the '62 Monza to paint it a few years ago, and now I can't figure out to to attach the horn ring using the parts I have. There are just three screws to attach the horn honker parts. The horn ring has three large holes that are bigger than the screw heads, so obviously, they are not for attaching the horn ring. Don't remember what was holding it on when I took it apart, and did not take any photos of the assembly. The steering wheel just has the big hole in the center to bolt it to the steering column, two larger holes for attaching a steering wheel puller, and three small holes for attaching the horn honking parts, which all go behind the horn ring. Did not find anything on this in the shop manuals and have no idea how to attach the horn ring now. Any EM folks out there know how this works?

Look at page 4-10 of the 1961 Corvair and Corvair 95 Shop Manual. You are missing part #13. This diagram shows a button only horn setup. Part 12 is replaced by your large Monza horn ring. So you put the metal disc you have with the plastic disk you have on top of it with the little metal tabs or the metal disk in the slots in the plastic disc. Metal ring first then the plastic disc, then your horn ring then the part #13 plastic ring and attach all with your 3 screws and finally the center button. The missing part fills the larger holes and holds the horn ring in place once the screws are in place. The large spring in your photo goes under the steering wheel against the spring seat to tension the bearing just like in the diagram.

when you push the horn ring the center of the metal disc collapses and contacts metal at the center of the steering wheel by the nut and washer. if this area is not clean the ground path will not be completed to make the horn blow. The out edge of the metal disc should not contact metal in the steering wheel or the horn will blow continuously.

Thanks! I thought something was missing. No idea what happened to part #13, may have ended up with my LM parts. Will probably have to make one.

The exploded view does not show this OTHER plastic ring that I DO have (see attached photo). I'm guessing that they added it for the '62 model year? Where in the stack does it go?

Like I tried to explain above. the metal disk goes in first with the concave side toward the steering wheel. The plastic disk you have goes on top of it with the 3 little notches on the edge referenced to the 3 little tabs that stick out the top side of your metal disk. The the horn ring and then the plastic ring you are missing go after that. It is used with the horn ring but not with the non-Monza horn buttons. Be advised that the little plastic ring your are missing is not the same for all years.

by the way, there is a similar part on late models that seems to fit but the height of the cylinders where the screws go through is not the same. I can not right now remember if the early model one is taller or the other way around.
