Center Console
Center Console
I had a installed a modern radio in the dash of my 69 Corvair but after a few years of looking at it decided it just did not belong there. So I’m building this console to hide the modern radio and also add hidden cup holders. Been working on it for about a month or so, still some work to do. The center section will have aluminum skin like the radio all the way up to the cup holder slide out. I have some ideas about how it will look when finished as it’s an evolving project.

Re: Center Console
Unfortunately, finding a good way to mount a modern head unit in the LM Corvair in place of the unique factory radio has never been satisfactorily resolved.
Custom console designs have also been attempted, with mixed results. A San Antonio, Texas restoration shop (Jeff Lilly Restorations) did the beautiful 1965 Monza convertible shown below. Their custom console design is shown for your info...

Good luck with your project console. Looking forward to seeing the final outcome.

Re: Center Console
Thanks for the comments. More progress.
added some body filler at transitions for a smooth curve. center section metal cut for opening and check for fit. paint added for visual, vinyl ordered to match green seat upholstery. I think some of the will metal be painted black to give it that 60’s look.Steve

I really like the look. I think it turned really nice. I'm thinking about fabricating a console and may incorporate some of your ideas.

Re: Center Console
Thanks for the comments. All I had was a couple of ideas of what I wanted. Certainly did not want it to look like something from a restomod project. Several design changes along the way. Probably revisit the lid, it’s not quite right. I will post a pic when I put it in the Monza.

Re: Center Console
But where does the radio go. And, are you going to mount speakers to it? Also will it mount in or just be placed in?
Re: Center Console
That turned out really nice. I like it!
Re: Center Console
The radio is attached to the flip up cover. No room for speakers really. Have not attached it to the floor yet, it fits snugly between the seats. It’s not perfect, turned out pretty good, thanks for the comments.

Re: Center Console
Steve,
I really love how you did your console. That popout drink holder is a nice touch. I have some ideas for one floating around in my head. This is a great visualization and execution. Cheers.
