engine rebuild cost

Post by gotahavit »

Can someone throw out some estimates of engine rebuild cost, I know it all depends on what they find. Include engine removal and install. Wanting to make the powertrain as reliable as I can for a driver not a museum restoration. Any trans rebuild cost and front end rebuilds. Don't need to get real tech just throw out some numbers please.thanks

The last 140 I built had $5000 in machine shop cost's and parts, deep seat heads are a must have item for reliability, those are $1200-$1800 alone, there is a big difference between a complete competent rebuild and a refresh, so price depends what you want? also no competent engine builder will warrantee a rebuild with stock valve seats,, tic tic tic BOOM! :)

Engine rebuild parts and machine work costs run $3000-5000, then add labor and any externals rebuilt or refreshed at the same time like fuel lines carbs, ignition etc. Complete suspension, steering and brake rebuild front and rear, can easily run up a couple thousand in parts plus labor. Transaxle rebuild is all over the map depending on what transaxle and how bad the existing parts are.

$3995 with deep seats
I just spoke to Mark - what a nice guy and he really knows his craft! His price for a rebuild is very reasonable. Compared to DOHC motorcycle engines that I rebuild, this is a real bargain. I will be using his services for my 140 heads and maybe more.

I've bought a lot of parts from him. Never a problem.

Dave , could you enlighten me on the deep seat heads. I know nothing, how do I tell what
I have? I have no mechanical info on the engine other than it is not a original 62. trying to contact an old owner to find out what has been done. Can anything be told by serial numbers?

No heads come with deep seats. They are installed by good head rebuilders. Heads have part numbers cast into them that will tell you what horsepower engine they are for i.e. 140, 110, 95 etc.

My current engine rebuild is costing me more then I remember it did in the past.. I'm almost done with my 1964 110 pure stock motor and I'm already at $5000.00. But I have to admit, I did everything. I don't ever want to open this motor again in my lifetime.. So I got everything... I am having the car, a 1964 Monza Convt., professionally done here in Calif. They have completely media blasted the car and everything is getting reworked, I mean everything, from all the rubber bits, wiring, to new suspension springs, to interior and top.. It's going to look like it just rolled off the line in 1964.. This one may cost me my marriage.!! But it was my Father's car and it's just a 2 owner.. I will probably have $7 grand in just the motor when I'm done, that's including the rebuilt Trans and Diff... I did source most of my parts from Clarks.. I know, but it was just easier.. I still have 3 more cars and motors to go to get the whole fleet all running.. Good luck on your project.. "GOT TO SPEND THE DOUGH TO MAKE THEM GO" :chevy:
