What is the proper length of the fan belt for a 64?

There is one length for all of them as far as I know. I just ordered mine by part number from one of the Vendors, put it on, and have driven 10 years without thinking about it.

It's been established the auto parts stores computers and books list the WRONG fan belt for the Corvair. The Clark's belt is correct as is the Gates 3V560.

I have to agree with richard --- no need to re-invent the wheel. Consensus on cause of fan belt issues is: rusty pulley(s), fan bearing at wrong height, fan belt too tight, wrong belt. If you are an aggressive driver that revs the engine and shifts fast, then the lighter mag fan and belts guides will take care of it.

Be sure to check the fan and idler bearings for any sign of rough operation while the belt is off. Also check the alternator for signs of bad bearing operation, and inspect the harmonic balancer to make sure it is not failing.

I should have added that the auto parts stores (and belt manufacturers) list the WRONG fan belt for the Corvair - it's too wide.

The Gates 3V560 is correct. The Clark's belt is also the correct size. Note that often a new belt will stretch and should be checked every 100 miles until it holds the proper tension. Usually two or three adjustments are all that is needed.

Hopefully just installing a correct new belt will be all that is needed. If you order a belt from Clark's, I would recommend ordering a spare at the same time. Keep the spare belt and the needed tools in your toolkit in the trunk so that you can fix roadside emergencies. Don't forget to pack a flashlight. Belts have been known to flip at night!
